Career
Doane made his debut at the age of fifteen, in
2001. After being contracted by WWE he appeared in its farm federation Ohio
Valley Wrestling.
Doane was given a 'male cheerleader' gimmick at a
WWE house show as part of a new stable, the Spirit Squad. The group went on to
make their RAW debut on January 23, 2006 during Coach and Jerry Lawler's Royal
Rumble qualifying match. He would compete under the new name of Kenny.
Since then, The Spirit Squad have made more
appearances on RAW and WWE Unlimited. This included performing a special cheer
for Trish Stratus during a celebration held for her by Mickie James. The Spirit
Squad then became a part of an on-going feud between WWE chairman Vince McMahon
and Shawn Michaels. The heel McMahon hired the Spirit Squad to perform
disrespectful cheers and attack Michaels. Ken Doane was involved in a 4-on-1
handicap match on the February 20, 2006 RAW, against Shawn Michaels. Ken Doane
and his teammates in the Spirit Squad were disqualified, but they continued the
beatdown after the match, prompting Michaels' former partner Marty Jannetty to
get involved. The Spirit Squad even won a 4 on 1 tornado handicap steel cage
match against Michaels, and interfered during the Michaels/McMahon match at
WrestleMania 22.
At the March 6, 2006 edition of RAW, Kenny competed
in his first singles match (as part of the Spirit Squad) where he defeated
Eugene. On a later edition of RAW, Kenny would be involved in a six-man tag
match along with Spirit Squad partners Johnny and Mikey, where he would once
again face off against Eugene, along with tag parners Val Venis and Viscera. The
Spirit Squad would win this match, injuring Venis' right arm in the process and
putting him out of action for several weeks.
On the April 3, 2006 edition of RAW, Kenny, along
with fellow Spirit Squad member Mikey, defeated The Big Show and Kane to win the
World Tag Team Championship with help from the other members of the Spirit Squad
(Nicky, Mitch, and Johnny). With the win, Kenny became the second youngest WWE
superstar (20 years, 18 days) to win a championship in the company, second to
René Duprée (19 1/2 years exactly) who won the World Tag Team Championship with
Sylvan Grenier on June 15, 2003.
It was revealed that even though Kenny and Mikey
won the championships, and are listed as such on the WWE's RAW roster page, the
whole group are recognized as champions. As a result of this rule, Nicky and
Johnny defended the titles in the rematch the following week.T
On the April 17, 2006 edition of RAW, all five
members of the Spirit Squad defeated Rob Van Dam in a 5-on-1 Handicap match. On
the April 24, 2006 edition of RAW, all five members of the Spirit Squad faced
John Cena, Triple H, and Edge in a Handicap match. The match went to a no
contest when Triple H started brawling with John Cena.
At Backlash 2006, Kenny and the rest of the Spirit
Squad assisted Mr. McMahon and Shane McMahon in defeating Shawn Michaels and
"God" in a tag-team match. The five members of the squad put HBK through a table
with their "High Spirits" maneuver allowing Mr. McMahon to get the pinfall
victory.
The following night, the Spirit Squad were made
co-GMs of RAW by Mr. McMahon, who decided to take the night off. Kenny was
booked in a WWE Championship match against John Cena after the group drew
"Spirit Straws". The special guest referee for the match, Triple H, eventually
walked out of the match after attacking both Cena and the Spirit Squad. Shawn
Michaels took over from there as referee. He ended up assisting Cena in getting
the victory, thus getting his revenge on the Squad from the previous night.
On the May 8, 2006 edition of RAW, the Spirit Squad
faced John Cena and Shawn Michaels in a 5 on 2 handicap match. After much chaos,
Kenny would pin Michaels after hitting him with a tag title belt. Kenny then
assaulted the referee, removed his leather belt, and began to whip Michaels with
it until Cena came back into the ring and made the save.
On the May 15, 2006 edition of RAW, Kenny was put
in a match against Shawn Michaels with the Spirit Squad banned from ringside.
Triple H was put in Kenny's corner by Mr. McMahon to attack Shawn in case there
was a problem. When held by Shane McMahon, Triple H used the sledgehammer to
accidentally hit Shane. The match between Michaels and Kenny was a no contest.
On the May 29, 2006 edition of RAW, Kenny lost to
Triple H in a "Spiritjack" match, similar to a lumberjack match but with the
remaining four members of the Spirit Squad in Kenny's corner, and no one in
Triple H's corner. He lost after a pedigree. The squad then teamed up and
attacked Triple H, until he got his hands on a sledgehammer and cleaned house.
He and the rest of the Spirit Squad lost to
D-Generation X in a 5 on 2 match at Vengeance. They would then go on to lose a 5
on 2 elimination match to DX at Saturday Night Main Event, he was the last
remaining member of the Squad and was unsuccessful in defeating the two men.
On July 18, 2006, rumors began to circulate that
WWE would soon be breaking up the Spirit Squad. The likely reason for this
decision would be the desire to push Kenny as a singles star competing in the
Intercontinental Division.
