Our Review
of Wizards of Waverly Place: Supernaturally
Stylin
The Wizards of Waverly Place is about
three siblings that are learning to become Wizards. Although, unlike a
popular book and movie, these teens do not go to a mystical castle to be taught
by fantastic wizards, they are taught by their father, in their basement, who
does not have any magical powers of his own. The kids do not wear
robes, but do practice a lot of magic when their father isn't looking, which
gets them into tons of trouble.
The show, although targeted towards
teens and tweens, is actually not so bad (from an adult's point of view).
The plot of the episodes are fairly simple, with straight-forward jokes meant to
get a laugh - and have to deal one way or another with clothing. Although
the humor is kept at a fifth grade level, the show is entertaining and a lot
better than a lot of the other stuff on TV for this age group. The acting
is not bad for a young cast and the father is a good actor in his own right.
The episodes cover such teen topics as fashion, boys, school and fixing the
problems they cause by misuse of the magic, like turning into a werewolf.
The episodes also seem to have their own moral lessons (although not always
obvious), such as cheaters never win.
As mentioned above, I really did
enjoy the show, almost like it was a guilty pleasure -- and wanted to find out
how each episode ended. I also found a few of the jokes amusing -- like
the girl/dog blind date. I think most teens and tweens would enjoy this
DVD, and if you are a parent, it will not be so bad if you have to watch it
yourself.
