Week in and week out, "Pez" employs her skills as a police detective to fight crime. She finds she must employ the Witchblade to combat a much greater and frighteningly organized conspiracy of evil that threatens the very soul of humanity. Our Review of Witchblade

This TV show is based on a comic book that published its first issue in 1995 about a female detective for the NYPD that has gained an almost cult following.  The comic, published by Top Crow, is a standout in the industry from the perspective of the story, art and the character of Witchblade has become well known throughout the comic industry (it has been involved in crossover stories with other comics in various companies including Marvel and DC.  The original comic has also spin off into other comic titles.  In 2001 it hit the television airwaves with a mildly successful series that lasted two seasons (the current DVD we are reviewing).  In 2004 it was adapted into an anime series with a manga series adaptation in 2006. The character is so hot that in 2009 it will be coming to a theater near you (www.witchblade2009.com).

Although a comic geek, most of my comic knowledge is from issued prior to 1988/1989.  By 1995, when this comic came out, I was not paying much attention to the industry, and did not hear about the Witchblade comics.  When the series came out on television in 2001, I must admit that I did not watch it, I may have seen a commercial or two while watching a ball game on TNT, but do not really remember it even being on.  So I come into this this review almost blind to the character and its pulp roots.

With little expectations I opened up the DVD case and watched the first episode.  I cannot say it was the greatest thing I had ever seen, but on the other hand, I cannot say that I hated it either.  In fact I was intrigued by the storyline and the characters.  The main character Sara Pezzinni is played by Yancy Butler who  not only has a bit of acting talent, but with her good looks (a cross between Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie) is very easy on the eyes.  The supporting cast was also better than I had anticipated.  The strongest asset of this series is its writing which provides great lines for the characters while setting out interesting plots throughout each episode.

The full series was very great to watch, wanting more when I came to the last episode.  I have a feeling that when the movie comes out and a new fan base emerges, these DVDs will become very popular, since it was a good series that just did not have a large enough following at that time.  The nice part about this CD is that it also includes a few featurettes such as Bringing the Blade to Life and Wielding the Blade.  Another bonus is the original casting sessions for the actors, which is always interesting to see.   When I watch these I always think to myself, if I was in the position to hire the cast, would I have chosen that person?  Well watch it and let me know if they made the right choice.

This was a good series on DVD and hopefully they will bring it back with the success of the upcoming movie.
