Our Review of Super Heroes: The Filmation Adventures

As I have indicated before, I collect comics.  In my youth, I guess before I really began to collect, when my parents would buy me comics it was usually either a Richie Rich or Archie, but if they were to get me a Super Hero, it would be something out of the DC universe such as a Superman.  I also loved to watch all of the superhero cartoons on TV Saturday mornings back in the seventies.  Although the basic 8 to 10 slot had all of the more recent cartoon, if you were like me and woke up early, they would usually have a lot of the reruns from the older shows like Rocky & Bullwinkle, Yogi Bear and for those really early risers, Davey & Goliath and of course the old super hero cartoons such as Super Heroes.

Like they usually do, watching these old animations are always a trip back in time.  The animation itself may not compare to the enhanced art of today, but they were still good for the time and on par with the animation being created by Hanna-Barbera at the time.  The story lines were not bad either, with classic plots that could have come out of the comics themselves. The selection of cartoons showed a wide range of characters from the DC universe, including the Justice League of America (JLA), Teen Titans, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Flash and a character that does not get much recognition -The Atom.

The DVD also includes a very well done documentary about Lou Scheimer, the founder of Filmation Animation Studios (that produced the animation on this DVD).  It is aptly named: Animation Maverick: The Lou Scheimer Story. It covers his life and his contributions to the world of animation, such as the breakthrough animation in He-Man.

As a fan of the world of comics, I found it very enjoyable watching these cartoon, however, I would probably say that any fan of animation would enjoy this DVD as well. [Review by Ian Ripley]
