Michael Somerville Interview, July 17, 20061) How did you get into comedy? I tried it on a dare in college-- they had a professional coming to campus and they wanted a student to open the show. I talked about cafeteria food and warm beer... all my friends laughed and I was hooked. 2) Why did you get into comedy? After school, I tried working at an office job but my neck was getting irritated from shaving every day. To do comedy, you don't even have to shower. 3) You are the host of Starz Stand Up or Shut Up - In your own words, how would you describe the show? It is an honest and incredibly accurate look at what its like to try standup. From working the survival job and sitting in your apartment trying to figure out what's funny to that hopeful look in a comic's eyes after delivering a bit only to see it dashed on the rocks of silence. 4) Were your own learning experiences as a new comic similar to the ones faced by the individuals on Stand Up or Shut Up? Absolutely... every comic has to pay them dues. 5) Have you picked up any new comic tips or techniques from watching the individuals go through their classes? If so, what have you learned? I really enjoyed the enthusiasm and excitement the students brought to the stage. It reminded me of how fortunate I am to be doing this. 6) What was the most challenging part about hosting this show? Being on set at 6am. I got into comedy so I could sleep until noon! 7) Who is the best comedian you have ever seen perform? What sets him/her apart from the rest? The best I've ever seen live is Dave Chappelle. He is such a naturally funny person that every other word he says gets a laugh. I've seen him riff for 30 minutes off a piece of paper that has two words on it... and kill. It was truly impressive. 8) Have you ever heckled a comedian you were watching? Not out loud. 9) What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into a career as a comedian? Go for it! I think everyone should try it at least once in... but keep your options open. It is a random, unpredictable way to make a living and I don't need your mom blaming me. 10) If you were stuck on an island with three other people and you were able to choose those three people - who would you pick, and why? Jessica Simpson, a Starbucks barista and a man who knows how to make boats. Thank you for answering these questions, and good luck with the show. |
