Our Review of Shaggy and Scooby-Doo: Get A Clue

Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are two characters that will forever be endearing to all who watch them.  As a kid back in the 1970's, I watched the cartoon because it was fun with crazy bad guys and the characters of Scooby and Shaggy were just cool.  Back then I might not have understood the cultural, social and political innuendos written into the episodes, but it didn't matter, I liked it as did kids and adults at the time.

Even though a few decades have past since its creation by Hanna-Barbera, the two main characters have essentially remained the same.  Shaggy is a goofy, laid-back guy that goes with the flow and Scooby-Doo, the lovable and zany dog.  In earlier renditions of the cartoon, Fred, Velma, and Daphne have always been partnered with the pair.  However, in this version, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are on their own.  This version is the first to change the character make-up of the pair -- it gives them guts and initiative to fight crime on their own.  Although they are still not "brave" in the obvious sense, these episodes allow the writers to delve more into their characters and their abilities as opposed to being the bungling  comedy relief of the crime solving team. Another big change in this series is the fact that Shaggy's uncle gave him lost of money and with the money he was able to upgrade the Mystery Machine and also now have a robot to aid them on their adventures.

I must admit, it took some time to get used to the "new" version of Scooby and Shaggy, but by the second episode, I began to enjoy them, although at some points I did shake my head and wonder when the other members of the gang would show up.  The writers also gave it the most "modern" flavor than all the other versions and brought them up to the 21st century with the technology and lingo they used.  But there are some strange moments, like the opening scenes, where my daughter best summed it up with "this is weird." However, she stayed with me and watched the entire DVD and wanted to watch more -- so it is definitely appealing to the younger viewers.
