Our Review of Popeye the Sailor
Although the dark cloud of the Nazi regime had already begun to spread its wings in 1939, the United States had remained out of it until the Day of Infamy when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Although these were times of war when the sons and daughters of many nations gave their lives defending their homelands and their freedoms, there was still time for entertainment and merriment. As a sailor, Popeye became one of the unofficial symbols of the navy and the U.S. during the war. Popeye is incredibly strong, morally based and always overcomes all bullies and obstacles regardless of the odds and also had that all-American gritty quality. Yes, he can be a little bumbling, it also shows that we all are all not perfect. [They also gave him a new cleaner look with a white uniform.] Although fictional, he in many ways, was an epitome of the American spirit, there was still time for an alleviation of all the turmoil with a bit of comedic interruptions.
The episodes on this DVD collection provide us with a look not only at animation during these wartime years, but also a look at life and culture during those times as well. It was a different time, and there are many instances where the times were not very nice, and many of the stereotypical prejudices of the times are represented during a number of scenes. Although it would not carry over very well with today's very PC world, it unfortunately, was a part of that period of history (and luckily we have come a long way since then). But most of these episodes were just plain fun and did not include that sort of junk.
Not all of the episodes are war related. Since the war did not start until December of 1941, there are many episodes that were made prior to the war's beginning. However, it is interesting to note that the episode "The Mighty Navy" was released prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Even when the plot was based in a war time setting, many of them still focused on the rivalry between Popeye and Bluto for the heart of Olive Oil.
This is a great set of episodes during a trying time in World history. This volume also includes some very well done bonuses, such as some seriously very good commentaries, short documentaries called Popeye Popumentaries, a documentary on animation during the 1920s and some additional animated shorts. Overall, another great selection of DVDs.
