Our Review of Our Gang Collection
Six decades after the first MGM release of the Our Gang shorts I began watching them. As a kid I did not think about the racial stereotypes being portrayed in them, to me, as a kid, I enjoyed them. I was a kid, the actors were kids and I was able to relate. The kids formed bonds between each other, had their own issues that may have mirrored my own, had problems with relationships, bullies & school. But at the very essence of these episodes were that they were fun to watch. As I got older and my own tastes became more sophisticated, they were still fun to watch. The "shorts" (they were short films that movie theaters showed during the movie intermissions along with news, the main feature and other shorts) were first released in 1922 and were in black and white and did not have any sound. These shorts were very popular and maintained a continuous following. Since its inception, the episodes went through a number of changes of actors, and in 1938 was sold to MGM who began producing the shorts with sound, which are most of the more well-known episodes that I remember.
This DVD includes all of the MGM Episodes from 1938 thru 1944. After watching all of them (yes, I watched all of them), they were still all enjoyable, including all of those great characters, such as: Alfalfa, Spanky, Buckwheat, Chubby, Butch and even the ever lovin' Froggy and Pete (the dog) -- and of course, there is always the lovely Darla. If you are up on your Our Gang history, you will also remember that Mickey is a very young innocent looking Robert Blake.
There are 52 episodes, so I am not going to review each one, but just know that each one is great and once you start watching one, you cannot stop. This is one great DVD collection for anyone.
