Our Review of Justice League
Wow, I just reviewed the Blu-Ray release of Super Heroes: The Filmation Adventures, which was produced in the 1960s and followed it up by watching the Blu-Ray version of Justice League (season one) - and to go from the old style animation with normal resolution to a modern animated series on Blu-Ray with 1080i resolution is like Dorothy walking out of her fallen black and white house into the colorized world of Oz. After seeing this contrast, it is a wonder why every movie or TV show is not in High Definition.
The Justice League Season One on Blu Ray includes twenty six episodes that aired on the Cartoon Network in 2001. I still remember the commercials for it before it began to air - and wanted to see it. It seemed like it was geared towards the older fan, than the child-oriented Super Friends or even the aforementioned Super Heroes. Although I was only able to catch a few episodes, I did enjoy them.
The animation for this series is top-notch, with TV animation guru Bruce Timm taking the lead on this series (he worked on a number of Superman & Batman series, including Batman Beyond) and his distinct angularly drawn features of the characters are clearly present. The episodes are also each well produced.
The stories for Justice League do not include the traditional plots you would find in the comics. It is not just good guys vs. bad guys. The series also delves into modern cultural and political turmoil beyond all of the normal super hero business. Even in the character makeup of the Justice League, the creators decided to go with John Stewart as its Green Lantern, while passing over the more known members Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner. The significance, for those of you that do not know, is that Stewart is black, which does not conform to the original makeup of the original 1960s Justice League of America (JLA). This more modern team composition allows the writers to be more expressive and not to confine them to the old prejudices of a white-only super universe. The team's lineup is also different in another important way, Aquaman, who was one of the original JLA members was swapped out for Hawkgirl, which provides the team with two female members to once again provide a more modern makeup of the group to both draw in more non-niche viewers, but to also provide the writers with a more realistic look at today's non-fiction society. [But do not worry, Aquaman does appear in the series.]
Beyond the societal themes within the episodes are some great action stories and yes, many fights between the Justice League and the bad guys are prevalent throughout and include both new villains and old favorites such as Lex Luthor and Vandal Savage. The episodes were well written and enjoyable as a viewer (even if I were not a comic nerd).
Beyond the twenty six episodes on 3 Blu-Ray disks, the Season One Blu-Ray also includes a few extra bonuses (some not on the original DVD release) -- and bonuses are my favorite part of a box set. These include a really good creator's commentary on a few of the episodes, a panel discussion called Inside Justice League, a look at character design in The Look of The League, and a "never before seen" promo called Justice League: The First Mission. The Blu Ray also includes The Blackhawk Theme music video.
This is an excellent Blu-Ray to add to your animation or superheroes collection, or a reason to go out and purchase your first Blu-Ray player. [Note: Did you know that about 2/3rds of all Blu-Ray players sold are on PS3s -- and that XBox 360 will be coming out with its own Blu-Ray version (now that the HD battle has been lost).]
