THE SECOND SEASON BEGINS SUNDAY JUNE 8TH AT 9PM ET/PT
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:
HISTORY™ ON THE ROAD AGAIN WITH AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL ICE ROAD TRUCKERS RETURNS WITH TRUCKERS ATTEMPTING TO CONQUER NEW FRONTIER 200 MILES NORTH OF ARTIC CIRCLE
Season Two of Hit Series That Chronicles History of Arctic Region Premieres Sunday, June 8 at 9pm ET/PT
For a brief window during the coldest part of the winter, the only way to reach the remote communities and natural gas exploration sites of this region, which lies more than 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, is by driving over an extraordinary ice road that winds along the Mackenzie River. Contending with Arctic storms that hit without a moment’s notice, even the most seasoned truckers find themselves challenged by the extreme polar conditions, isolation and the lack of basic comforts. Temperatures during the winter months here can dip as low as -60.
Last season in Yellowknife, our truckers had narrow land bridges to escape to. This season it’s ice all the way, no land, no sanctuary. Four familiar faces return to see if their ice road experience translates to this more imposing river and ocean ice road. Hugh Rowland, Rick Yemm, Drew Sherwood and Alex Debogorski are all on an even playing field and Hugh is no longer the boss of Rick and Drew. New truckers will be introduced throughout the season, including Erik Refrine, and field supervisor Jerry Dusdal, veterans of the Arctic ice road.
Ice Road Truckers focuses on six drivers and the history of this rarest of professions. Returning to Ice Road Truckers are:
Hugh Rowland – Hugh “Polar Bear” Rowland, an animal on the ice road, is one of the toughest and most experienced ice road truckers on the planet. This year he’s on ice roads that he hasn’t seen in over twenty years, in an Arctic environment far more desolate and isolated than the roads out of Yellowknife, but he’s undeterred. Hugh is used to be being the boss, and now he has a new employer to contend with. He hasn’t had to prove himself in years, and now he’s a newbie to the Arctic ice roads.
Alex Debogorski - The legend of the Yellowknife ice road trucking community, he is entering his 27th year as a driver, but first on this ice road. Although he’s the most capable of drivers, he is out of his comfort zone, which could make for an interesting season. He’s just another rookie here and he has to learn a whole new set of skills for driving these dangerous ice roads.
Rick Yemm – Fired by Hugh last year, Rick is now an equal up in the Arctic working the same ice roads for a different company. This year, Rick is out to prove that he is a true ice road trucker. He is a tattooed, loudmouth, lively character and showed up this winter sporting a bright blue Mohawk.
Drew Sherwood -Last year, Drew Sherwood quit early during his rookie season on the Yellowknife ice roads. Drew is looking to show that last year was a fluke and that this experienced highway driver can make it through a full season on the ice road.
The newcomers include:
Erik DuFresne – A French Canadian and an Arctic enthusiast, he’s driven the ice roads every year since the age of 19. Erik is one of the most safety-minded, collaborative, and environmentally conscious drivers on the ice roads. He loves to turn up the music and rock out in his cab, has a great sense of humor and loves to take in the natural beauty of his surroundings.
Jerry Dusdal – On the “oilpatch” of the Arctic ice roads, Jerry is the big dog. As field supervisor, or “truck push,” of Mullen’s Trucking, he’s in charge of every truck that leaves “the lease” and the safety of his truckers. Jerry is instinctually masterful at this highly-demanding job. He misses driving the big rigs, but makes it his business to personally look after every machine and every trucker behind the wheel. Says Jerry, “I don’t have any kids, but out here I have thirty of them.”
The Ice Road Truckers minisite, www.history.com/iceroadtruckers, provides profiles on the people and places featured in the new season. The site will include full episodes, exclusive short-form videos, an interactive Ice Road Backdrop Builder that allows users to create and download custom wallpapers, a Cold Weather Survival Guide, in-depth information about the towns of Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, trivia, exclusive interviews and more.

Season 2 Driver Biographies
ALEX DEBOGORSKI: AGE: 54 ICE ROADS: 26
Alex is larger than life, enormously capable and able to take on the hardest and most demanding jobs. He’s a street intellectual who is also a Roman Catholic lay prison minister. Alex is the first generation son of a Polish military officer, known all around town, not least for having run for mayor (his campaign posters were pieces of old automobile bodies), and he is a beloved wit whose CB diatribes have kept many a trucker awake and laughing through those long winter nights. Juvenile delinquent, adult delinquent, he is the proud father of 11 children and 7 grandchildren.
HUGH ROWLAND: AGE: 51 ICE ROADS: 21
Hugh, an animal on the ice road, is one of the toughest and most experienced ice road truckers on the planet. “It’s about adventure and cash.” Hugh is a big kid and known for being sarcastic. Some people call him “the polar bear.” This year he’s on ice roads that he hasn’t seen in over twenty years, in an Arctic environment far more desolate and isolated than the roads out of Yellowknife, but he’s undeterred. He says, “The winter road just gets in your blood. It’s adventurous, challenging, and you can go as hard as you want.” Hugh is born and bred in Canada, lived in Yellowknife most of his life, and then moved to B.C. He’s married, with three kids, and his wife worries about him every year when he leaves to work the perilous ice roads.
RICK YEMM AGE: 32 ICE ROADS: 2
Rick, fired by Hugh Rowland last year, is now an equal, up in the Arctic working the same ice roads for a different company. This year, Rick is out to prove that he is an ice road trucker to himself and Hugh. He is a tattooed, loudmouth, lively character and showed up this winter sporting a bright blue Mohawk. “Works hard plays hard.” Two years ago was his first season on the road. The first thing he said about the experience was that he should have “fucking walked out, but I was too stupid and too stubborn … It’s not for the faint of heart.” Rick’s wife, well aware of the dangers of these particular ice roads, fears for his safety.
DREW SHERWOOD AGE: 46 ICE ROADS: 1
Last year, Drew Sherwood quit early during his rookie season on the Yellowknife ice roads, because he felt like Hugh, his employer, wasn’t treating him fairly or respectfully. Drew is looking to show that last year was a fluke and that this experienced highway driver can make it on an ice road as good as Hugh, Rick, or Alex. Last year, it was about the money, but this year, it’s also about respect. A family man, his wife and kids the most important thing in his life and he wants to make a lot of money to help better their lives. A vacation in Cuba, or a family trip to see a live NASCAR race, are big motivations for Drew to bounce back and have a strong year on the ice this time around.
BEAR SWENSON AGE: 59 ICE ROADS: 6
Bear Swenson is relatively new to the Arctic ice roads, making the jump north after spending most of his life in logging. Earned the nickname “Bear” from his resemblance to Smokey Bear during his lumberjack days, but also works a professional bear hunting guide when not trucking the ice roads. Known for his sense of humor, Bear’s quick with a joke or a little smack talk, but he’s an easygoing guy who can take it as good as he gives it. Bear’s good-natured, approachable personality has earned the respect of the locals, and though Bear can be critical of rookie mistakes he always looks out for the younger drivers. Proud of his two kids and seven grandchildren, he’s in ice road trucking for the money, but is also motivated by taking care of his family.
ERIK REFRINE
AGE: 45 ICE ROADS: 26
Born in Montreal, Erik was drawn to the rugged, natural beauty of Northern Canada as a teenager and now lives in Faro, Yukon Territory. An Arctic enthusiast, he’s driven the ice roads every year since the age of 19. Erik is one of the most safety-minded, collaborative, and environmentally conscious drivers on the ice roads. He loves to turn up the music and rock out in his cab, and has a good sense of humor and loves to take in the natural beauty of his surroundings. An expert mechanic as well as an outdoorsman, He’s constantly doing his own maintenance and repairs, and his hardcore work ethic often finds him in a garage working on his truck when the others are out at the bars. Married with no children, Erik counts hiking, fishing, and photography among his hobbies, and his keen photographer’s eye has a talent for spotting wild animals on and off the ice roads.
DAVEY LENNIE AGE: 47 ICE ROADS: 20
Born in Aklavik, a town of less than 600 people that’s only accessible by boat, plane, or ice road, Davey was truly born and raised in ice road country. A driver, mechanic, and jack-of-all-trades, Davey says he can “drive anything but a lawn mower” and do any job “except carpentry.” He’s a straight-talker, but also one of the most cheerful people you’ll ever meet up in the Arctic, always ready to do work that other people can’t or won’t do. He drove his first snowplow as a teenager, and worked profiling and building ice roads back when it was done by hand, drilling holes in the ice, and “praying you didn’t fall through.” A safety and Arctic survival expert, he has numerous stories of close calls on the ice and with local wild animals. He’s a good-hearted, patient father figure who looks after his fellow drivers and mechanics, and is always prepared to help anyone out. Half Inuvialuit, half Gwich’in, Davey is a true native of the Arctic and a respected veteran of its ice roads.
