James Brown Dies at 73: The Godfather of Souls Now Sings With the AngelsMonday, December 25, 2006 Legendary singer James Brown, who was a major influence on music over the past fifty years, and sometimes penned as the "Godfather of Soul" died this morning in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He went into the hospital yesterday for pneumonia and passed away before 2 am. At this time the doctors are unsure of the cause of death. Brown had an impact on many genres of music including soul, rhythm and blues, gospel and funk as well as rock, jazz, disco and even hip-hop and reggae. Brown was born on May 3, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina. He had his first big hit in 1956 with the band James Brown and the Famous Flames called "Please, Please, Please." However, it was a few more years until he hit it big again. In 1965 he released two of his biggest hits "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)." His music even made a statement on race relations, such as in the 1968 hit "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud." His music continued to become hits and influence other musicians such as The -Rolling Stones, Sly and The Family Stones, Prince, Michael Jackson, Ice-T, Public Enemy and many others. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and fans of the great James Brown. The next time you listen to a song, think to yourself, what would this sound like if there was never a James Brown? {Reported by Ian Ripley} Celebrity News Resources:
