KEATON SIMONS BIOGRAPHY
|
-
Keaton Simons was born on July 20, 1978
just outside of Los Angeles, California to parents Eliza (Garret)
Simons (singer, actress) and James Simons (producer: Malcolm in
the Middle) (divorced). He has one sister, Morgan Simons, a
step-sister,
Emma Roberts
(actress: Unfabulous), and a half-sister Grace Nickels. His
stepfather is Eric Roberts (actor) and is also related to
Julia Roberts (actress) and
Lisa Gillan (actress).
-
Keaton grew up in an environment filled
with show biz and entertainment. His mother, Eliza was a well
respected singer, actress and writer and even helped the booking of
bands for Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. His father, James Simons is
the producer of the hit TV comedy Malcolm in the Middle.
-
As an early teenage, he began getting
into music, but he also began testing the waters with acting. He
appeared in a few films in the early 1990, including 9 ½ Ninjas
(1991), Best of the Best II (1993), Family Prayers
(1993) and Bye, Bye, Love (1995).
-
However, he began to delve more and
more into his passion for music. He began to bring his guitar
wherever he went and began to be known as a solid guitarist around
town. He had many musical influences as a child such as rock, jazz,
soul and pop. He began to take these influences and mold them into
his own style. He helped to form a jazz-fusion band named Nobody
Knows and began to play around the L.A. area.
-
He left L.A. to go to college and
attended Evergreen State University in Olympia, Washington. At
Evergreen, he studied music and music composition. This gave him an
even broader understanding of the ins-and-outs of how to make good
music.
-
After college, he came back to Los
Angeles. Hip-hop and rap began to draw his attention. Before long
he found himself playing with many stars of the hip-hop scene such
as Tre Hardson (Pharcyde), Kim Hill (Black Eyed Peas), N’Dea
Davenport and even
Snoop Dogg.
-
Working with these and many other
performers gained him exposure in the music world. Then in 2000, he
was asked to write a song for the movie Mercy Streets
(co-starring stepfather Eric Roberts). This effort began to get the
notice of record labels.
-
As he began to write the music for the
movie, he began to focus on writing and pulled together a small
collection of songs. He put these songs onto a demo tape and began
to play it for record companies. When Maverick Records (Madonna’s
company), they really enjoyed what they heard and signed Keaton to a
record contract.
-
The songs on the demo tape wound up
being the first few songs of his debut release, Currently (EP),
which was released in April of 2004. It was released to the acclaim
of critics. He also began to tour around the country and concert
goers where amazed by the lyrics, sound and soul he brings to each
of his performances.
-
Besides talent, Keaton also has good
looks and in June of 2004, Elle Girl magazine named him one
of the “50 Hottest Guys Ever.”
-
Besides working on his own career, in
2004 he also leant some time to charity and contributed a song for
the album Love Rocks, for the Human Rights Campaign.
-
At the end of a very busy 2004, he
released his first full-length album, exes and whys with the help of
the record production trio known as the Matrix (they produce
Avril Lavigne). Critics
instantly acclaimed the two-disk album. The album has a bluesy,
down-to-earth sound and is a combination of
Bob Dylan,
Ray Charles and the Black Crows.
-
Keaton got his name and website onto
the MTV Video Music Awards when his stepfather (Eric Roberts)
mentioned him and his website in an introduction of
R. Kelly.
-
He continued with his
acting career and played the role of Jimmy DeNatale in 2006 in the
movie Hollywood Dreams.
-
Can You Hear Me,
his second full-length album, was released in 2008.
-
He appeared at the
singer-songwriter festival at the Hotel Carolina (in South
Carolina) in 2009, and again in 2010.
-
In 2010 Keaton was the
opening act for the REO Speedwagon and
Pat Benatar
Tour.
-
In 2012 he is to appear
in the movie Letting Go, playing the part of Max.

Keaton
Simons, described by the Los Angeles Times as “an old soul in a young man’s
voice,” has it all, as a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, musical
director, guitarist and pianist. Keaton recently captivated television
viewers when he performed a touching rendition of his song “Unstoppable” for
the participants of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab. The 33-year-old’s genuine love
and passion for music shines through during his performances around the
world, and his fans are eagerly awaiting the release of his sophomore album
and the next stage of his career.
Keaton has been in the studio hard at work on his new album, collaborating
with producer Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat,
One Republic), who has called Keaton an
incredible multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Keaton is intimately involved
with the whole recording process, creating the musical arrangements in his
songs and adding the instrumental elements into the mix, a show of his great
versatility. One of the song on the album entitled “Is There Any Other Way?”
was written by Keaton and Jason Mraz.
In his early 20s, Keaton composed the music for the motion picture Mercy
Streets. His work led him to sign a record deal with Maverick Records,
releasing a five-song EP in 2004 entitled Currently. Soon after,
Maverick was taken over by Warner Bros. and Keaton was left without a deal.
Rather than be discouraged, Keaton continued touring and making music,
eventually signing with CBS Records in 2008 and releasing his first full
length album, Can You Hear Me, produced by Grammy award winner Dave
Bianco (Bob Dylan,
Tom Petty). His songs began appearing on
hit television shows, including CSI, Numbers, Ghost Whisperer, Crash and
NCIS. Keaton won the Hollywood Music in Media Award in 2010 for his song
“Grim Reaper,” which appeared in NCIS and Crash. One of the songs that
Keaton co-wrote for the album, “Black and White”, was picked up by Disney
for its film Prom, renamed “We Could Be Anything” and rerecorded by
singer Nolan Sotillo.
Discovering his love of music at an early age, Keaton was born and raised in
Los Angeles,California, into a creative family with a father who was a
television producer and a mother who was an actress. He began playing piano
by ear before he could talk, and picked up the guitar at age 12. By the time
he was a teenager Keaton knew he wanted a career as a musician, and earned
his bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology at Evergreen State College in
Olympia, Washington. His studies exposed his curious mind to the diversity
of music around the world, and he immersed himself in everything from
classical composition and jazz, to blues and rock.
After graduating and returning home to Los Angeles, Keaton pursued his
career and has since ratcheted up a resume that reflects the hard work,
passion and dedication that he has invested in his career. Keaton has worked
and shared the stage with notable acts like
Gnarls Barkley,
Black Eyed Peas,
Snoop Dogg, Tre Hardson of the L.As.
alternative rap group the Pharcyde, Coldplay,
Chris Isaak, Guster, Five For Fighting, and Josh Kelley, with whom he
co-wrote three songs for one of Kelley’s albums. He has written and recorded
songs with the Matrix (Avril Lavigne),
and toured with Pat Benatar, REO
Speedwagon and Train. Keaton has performed on the Tonight Show with
Jay Leno, Late Late Show with Craig
Ferguson, Last Call with Carson Daly, where he performed with Ben
Harper at the Coachella Music Festival and at the United Nations.
Keaton’s soothing voice, personal and heartfelt lyrics, and sweet melodies,
along with his down to earth character, give listeners a joyous musical
experience. “My ultimate goal from my creations is to have it be as clear a
window from the deepest part of myself straight out to the world. And my
goal is to get more and more honest, more and more candid,” he says.
Look at for Keaton’s latest CD next spring. It is certain to make him a
household name and satisfy his fans with some very compelling new music.
