BIOGRAPHY
|
-
John Mayer was
born on October 16th, 1977 in
Bridgeport, Connecticut.
-
John took an early
liking to music, especially blues and began to
learn to play guitar. His biggest
influences were Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi
Hendrix. He began playing local bars by the age
of 15.
-
In 1996, he went
was accepted, and entered the Berklee College of
Music. However, he grew restless, wanting
to go out and play, so he dropped out only after
a few months. He then moved down to
Atlanta, Georgia to enter the music scene down
there.
-
In 1999 He
recorded an independent album called Inside
Wants Out that became successful with the
Georgia music crowd.
-
The following
year, he performed at the South By Southwest
Music Festival in Austin, Texas – then this lead
to a recording contract with Columbia Records.
-
His first “real”
album (released in 2001), Room For Squares,
was a big success. This earned him honors
such as:
-
2002 MTV Video
Music Award for Best New Artist (nominated)
-
2003 Grammy
Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
(Your Body is a Wonderland)
-
2003 Grammy
Award for Best New Artist (nominated)
-
2003 Radio
Music Award for Artist of the Year – Adult
Contemporary
-
2003 American
Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male
Artist (nominated)
-
2003 MTV Music
Video Award for Best Male Video (Your Body
is a Wonderland) (nominated)
-
In 2001, he also
had a well publicized relationship with actress
Jennifer Love Hewitt.
-
On the heels of
this success, he took his music to the road and
visited countries in Europe, Asia and North
America – while recording a double live album
(Any Given Thursday) which was released in early
2003.
-
In September of
2003, he released another album, Heavier
Things, which also went on to be bigger than
the last album. He has already been
nominated for two more Grammy’s (to be held
Feb.15, 2005): Song of the Year and Best Male
Pop Vocal Performance (for the song “Daughters”)
-
Besides the
success of his album and tour and the two Grammy
nominations in 2004, he also broke into the
television industry as a Host on VH1.
