BEYONCE KNOWLES BIOGRAPHY
|
-
Beyonce Knowles was
born on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas. She
enjoyed music at an early age and even joined
her church’s choir as a child. She also took
opera classes while she was young.
-
Under the
management of her father, Beyonce, her cousin
and two other girls joined together to form a
singing group. They performed together on Star
Search in 1992.
-
The group performed
under different names at clubs and small
venues. They finally settled on the name of
Destiny’s Child. They then recorded and released
their first single “No, No, No” which went
straight up to the top of the pop charts,
followed by their self titled debut album
Destiny’s Child in 1997.
-
They released their
second album, The Writings on the Wall in 1999,
which was an even bigger success with three
top-ten hits (“Bills, Bills, Bills,” Jumpin,
Jumpin,” and “Say My Name.”
-
The group had
another hit song on the soundtrack for Charlie’s
Angels in 2000 entitled, Independent Women, pt.
1, where they were nominated for the
Grammy Award for Best
Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or
Other Visual Media and won the ASCAP Award for
Most Performed Songs from Motion.
-
2001 brought the group
two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B
Performance, but it also brought about a change
in the group with two members leaving, and a new
third member. However, the new trio stuck it
out and recorded the third
Destinys Child that
same year entitled Survivor, which gave
the group more awards, including another Grammy.
-
In 2002, she tried to
stretch her talents outside of music and
partnered up with Mike Myers in Austin
Powers: Goldmembers. Her performance led to
the nomination of the MTV Movie Award for
Breakthrough Female Performance.
-
In 2003, Beyonce
sampled the waters outside of the group and
recorded a hit single, “Bonnie and Clyde ‘03”
with Jay-Z which was nominated for the Grammy
Award for Record of the Year. That same year,
Beyonce released her first solo album,
Dangerously in Love. For someone that was
used to receiving awards, she was not
disappointed during the 2004 Grammy Awards where
she won five awards (Female R&B Vocal
Performance, R&B Performance by Duo or Group
With Vocals, Best R&B Song, Best Contemporary
R&B Album and with a nomination for Record of
the Year).
-
She
continued pursuing acting along with her music
career in 2003 and had a critically acclaimed
role in the movie The Fighting Temptations
where she was nominated for the Image Award for
Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and the
Black Reel Award for Film: Best Actress. She was
won the Black Reel Award for Film: Best Song
with Walter Williams Sr.
-
In
2004, she reunited with Destiny's Child and
released their fourth album in November of that
year, Destiny Fulfilled to the delight of
fans everywhere.
-
The
trio known as Destiny’s Child, while on their
European tour, announced on MTV (in June 2005)
that they were going to be breaking up to pursue
their own individual careers. The split would be
official after they finished up their world tour
on September 10, 2005 in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
-
Destiny’s Child appeared at the Live8 concert on
July 2, 2005.
-
In
July of 2005, singer-songwriter Jennifer Armour
filed a lawsuit against Beyonce claiming that
the song “Baby Boy” was partly stolen from a
song she had “shopped it around” to Beyonce’s
people. The hearing is scheduled for October 28,
2005. This is not the first time this has
occurred, Destiny’s Child was sued in 2003 for
alleged copyright infringement for the song
“Survivor.”
-
After the breakup of Destiny’s Child, Beyonce
released her second solo album, B’Day in
2006, which included 3 #1 songs and landed the
album at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
-
In
April 2008, Beyonce married
Jay-Z – a
high-powered wedding to say the least.
-
Her
third album, I Am . . . Sasha Fierce, had
four more hit singles with the album debuting at
#1 – and garnered her six Grammy Awards in 2010.
In January 2011, WikiLeaks produced information
that Beyonce, along with
Usher,
Mariah Carey,
and Nelly
Furtado, had received as much as $1 to
perform for Muammar Gadaffi. After public
pressure, she donated the money to the Clinton
Bush Haiti Fund.
-
4, her fourth studio album, was another #1
album – her fourth straight #1 album on the
Billboard 200 charts in 2011
-
Beyonce announced at the MTV Video Music Awards
in August 2011 that she and Jay-Z were having a
baby. Beyonce gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy
Carter on January 7, 2012.
-
Ryan Tedder, a music producer, confirmed in
February 2012 that Beyonce is working on two
upcoming projects (LA Times).
