Review of Watchmen Director's Cut on Blu-Ray

WatchmenThe Watchmen hold a special place in the hearts and minds of all of us comic geeks that were around in the 1980s when the first issue hit the newsstands (or your mom and pop comic shops).  The comic was seminal in the evolution of the modern comic book in substance and form.  It was one of those comics, that when you read it, you said, that there is something special here.   Those who frown upon the literal benefits of comics or pulp fiction have not really "read" a comic.  Okay, you cannot compare it to Chaucer or Shakespeare, but there is still some great writing in this genre and is even sometimes partnered with great artwork.  In the world that is comics, Watchmen had them both.

This, however, is not a summary or review of the version of Watchmen that was published in the print media so many years ago.  This is a review of the movie adoption of those original stories and potentially brought to life upon the cinematic stage.  I was apprehensive at first to go see this movie, in fact, I had not seen it in the theater when it was first released.  Partially due to the fact that I had too much too much going on at the time, partially because it was not in the movies that long, and partially because I did not want to see another comic book/graphic novel adoption that left me disappointed. At one time I was a faithful follower of the Fantastic Four and was highly anticipating its release.  Except for the release of the second Star Wars trilogy, I was never as "angry" with the writer, director and producer of a movie for letting me down so much.  So, when it came to watching this movie, I figured it would be like all the rest.

The movie, fortunately, was unlike the other adaptations, it was actually good.  Whereas, many of those movies would not have been anything without the special effects.  The storyline maintained the substance of the original, and well as its integrity.  They did not cast celebrities to hopefully add some extra padding to the box office, nor did they add special effects, for the sake of having special effects, even though the story would have not been affected if they added in the big time effects or not. Special effects, as I have mentioned quite often, should be a part of the movie, and not the main attraction.  Each character was well cast, and seemed to fit my original interpretation of the comic, if they were ever to appear in "real life."  The cinematography also captured the feeling of the original comic.  It tried to produce the almost dark and realistic view that was originally portrayed on the pages of the original work by Dave Gibbons.  The director (Zack Snyder) was able to pull the ink off the page and provide us with not only the look, but the feeling of reading the graphic novel.

Watchmen picture

The only thing I kept thinking is that those looking for the big blockbuster movies will not like what they see.  There are some cool special effects, but the movie does cover a lot of ground regarding each of the characters and the state of affairs of world politics of the time.   The tone and speed of the film plays like something from the old Sam Sloan genre.  It is not what today's non-stop action and gore movie goers expect to see, but it is what has made this movie so good and true to its original intentions.   Also, the unfamiliarity of the general public with these particular "superheroes" also makes it less desirable for the average movie goer (even many of today's young comic collectors may not be familiar with the comic, or even its meaning to the industry).   As you can tell, I do have a certain reverence for this comic, and am releaved that the movie, for the most part did it justice.

I am very happy that I was able to review the Blu-Ray Director's Cut version of the movie, which not only includes an additional 24 minutes of the movie, but also has a number of great bonus features.  For instance, there is a version where you can watch the movie with a narrative by the director, Zack Snyder, a featurette about how the original graphic novel impacted upon the comic industry, a comparison between the heroes and villains and how they mimic people in real life, all 11 Watchmen video journals, a My Chemical Romance video, a digital copy, and more.

If you want to see a really great comic adaptation, then this is the one to watch (and should be supplemented by reading the original graphic novel (reprints are available fairly cheap)).  If you can, get the Director's Cut on Blu-Ray version, the extras are truly worth it.
