Review of Towelhead

TowelheadWhen I think about coming of age stories, I usually think about such comedies as Porkys, Fast Times At Ridgemont High and more recently, American Pie. Towelhead (which was first released as Nothing Is Private) is nothing in the realm of that genre.  At times it is a drama, and at times a pseudo-comedy, but most of the time it balances on the edge of being a satire and drama.

There are elements of reality spread throughout the movie, and some might even seem real, but there are too many sub-plots that run through this to be the reality of just one girl -- or maybe that is the idea behind Alicia Erian's book, that Jasira Maroun is a compilation of many young girls that are seeking their own identity while on the verge of womanhood.   The issue of identity is central to the story. Jasira has a typical American mom, while her father is a Palestinian-American.  She takes on the mid-Eastern physical characteristics, which is the cause of ridicule amongst her schoolmates, yet she still wants to fit in.  Her parents are separated, which leads to the whole issue of family identity. She is in love with her bigoted, much older (and married) next-door neighbor as well as a black boy who is taboo for her to be with because of his color.  The movie is a search for her identity, which, I leave to you to watch to discern whether she finds it at the end or not.

The movie, in a very light-hearted way is also about sex.  Although it is usually the boys and men in movies that ate obsessed with it, this movie does a 180, and it is the young and naive looking Jasira that cannot turn her thoughts from it.  From her first period, to her first sexual experience, it is always in her forethought and in some ways the driving force behind the plot of the movie.

The movie was well written, and well acted.  Summer Bishil, who is pretty much a new-comber, did an excellent job in the lead role as Jasira, especially in some very difficult emotional scenes.  Although this is not really for a younger child or even a young teenager (if so, it should be watched with a parent to discuss many of the coming-of-age issues that arise, so they will be able to be discussed).
