I can remember when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first aired.
Although I was really too old to watch animated turtles fight evil, I
did anyway. I remember coming home from school during the
weekdays, grabbing a carton of milk, something to munch on, and sit in
front of the TV to watch (homework came later). But I can remember
watching many episodes of either the Turtles, He-Man, Smurf r-reuns,
etc., or whatever other cartoon or teen/tween-targeted show was on. Also
remember, these were the days just before cable, so there was not much
else on that were of interest to a guy about my age. As a comic
collector, I also purchased the comic books, and although I did not read
them, I remember the hype about the first few editions. Then the
movie came out, but by that point, I was really too old to go see it,
and did not have any little cousins to use to go to the movies, so the
first time I saw it was a few years later when it was first on cable.
Since this review is about the boxed set, and not the individual movies,
I will refrain from any critical analysis of the actual movies (either
positive or negative). However, these movies today, as they were
yesterday, are still entertaining to any young teen, pre-teen and even
younger. There is some violence (they carry weapons and fight the
bad guys), but not enough to deter young viewers (but as a
parent/guardian your discretion is advised), and it is not gory in the
least. Your kids will love it.
This set does bring back a memories of my
youth, and re-watching the movies was enjoyable - for its remembrance
sake. The turtles themselves have their own appeal. Besides
being crime fighters, I personally liked the fact that each is named
after a famous artist in history, they loved pizza and besides the
criminals, they were also struggling with their own identities as
mutants living in a world of humans, and also coping with being
teenagers who have been placed in a position of responsibility that many
adults would not be able to successfully cope with. I always saw
myself akin to Leonardo.
Being a 25th Anniversary Collector's
Edition, you know that this boxed set will include more than just the
movies. Of course there are a few actually cool giveaways such as:
a comic book; a signed sketch, character cards, and the coolest of the
items, a beanie hat (which my wife will not let me wear out in
public).
For all of you that want to re-live the
memories, or for your teens and pre-teens that want to watch some cool
do-gooder turtles beat up on bad guys, this is the ultimate TMNT
collection. |
