Run Fatboy Run (2007)

Plot of Run Fatboy Run
|
|
Dennis
(Simon Pegg) is an ordinary guy. He's a little overweight and he smokes,
but he's nice, charming and unassuming. However, five years ago, Dennis
did something that wasn't so nice. On his wedding day to his pregnant
fiancé Libby (Thandie Newton), Dennis did a runner. He just couldn't go
through with it. He didn't think he was good enough for Libby, so
instead of ruining her life, he ruined her big day. Now, five years
later, Dennis realizes he made a big mistake. He's still in love with
Libby. He still sees her all the time because of Jake (Matthew Fenton),
their five-year-old son, but all romantic ties have been severed.
Libby's now seeing Whit (Hank Azaria), a charming professional from the
City, and Dennis takes an immediate dislike to him. Whit is casual,
easy-going, successful and good with Jake; much to Dennis's annoyance.
How can Dennis compete with him? In direct contrast to Whit's sleek
lifestyle in the City, Dennis is a mere security guard for a ladies
retail store. Compared to Whit's effortless abilities, everything Dennis
attempts seems to end in disaster. Dennis feels demoralized and
overwhelmed by Whit's long list of achievements. In a last-ditch effort
to prove to Libby that he's changed his ways, Dennis impulsively
announces at her birthday party that he will run in the same London
Marathon that Whit has been training for. But does Dennis have the stuff
to trade his cold feet for running shoes?

Review of Run Fatboy Run
(Blu-Ray)
|

Sometimes you do not know what you got, until you lose it. The
moral of this story written by Michael Ian Black and Simon Pegg is that
if you have something even remotely good, do not loose it, because you
may not ever get it back. In this romantic comedy directed by
David Schwimmer (yes the guy from Friends), a man looses his
wife, but reconsiders his feeling for her every time he goes to pick up
their young son. The plot is about Dennis (Simon Pegg) realizing his
love for his ex-wife Libby (Thandie Newton) especially when another man
(Whit, played by Hank Azaria), comes into her life.
Run Fatboy Run then centers around
the upcoming London Marathon, which Whit has been training for. In
a logic, only one in love can truly understand, Dennis (the "fatboy")
decides that he has to run in the marathon to win back his ex's heart.
The only thing is that Dennis is far from being anything of a runner,
nor had he ever trained for anything like this in his life. While
racing for his past lover's attention, he also discovers things about
himself and his own life. Does everything come together at the
end? You will have to watch the movie to find out.
The cast (mentioned above) is superb, and
even though it was at times a bit sentimental for my own male muchismo
to digest, the movie was very entertaining. The script was witty
as well intelligent at times and does not insult the audience with
low-brow jokes that a lot of mainstream movies (and TV shows) ram down
our throats. Although Schwimmer may not yet be known as a
"Director," he has shown that he has a grasp for this end of the biz,
and should only improve upon his skills as he is thrust into new
projects over the next few years.
I was fortunate to have been able have
reviewed this movie on Blu-Ray, so the picture was crisp and clear as is
expected from this high definition format. For those of you like
me, that like to get more out of your purchase than just the movie,
there are a few bonus featurets, including Thandies Goof, the usual
deleted scenes footage, and sometimes the best features on the these
discs, the cast/director commentaries, where you get a sense of how the
actors and director approached the movie (or certain scenes), as well as
some of the behind-the-scenes stories that color in details to a lot of
the going-on's of the movie.
This was a wonderful movie and excellent
offerings on this disk. Although you may have missed it on the big
screen, I would suggest picking it up for your own home library. |
