RAIN is the story of a 19-year old African-American girl (named Rain)
who lives in the inner-city projects with her younger sister Beneatha;
her older brother, Roy; and their mother Latisha. When Rain's sister
becomes involved with gang members, she is drugged at a party and
becomes the subject of sexually explicit photos that are used for
blackmail. Rain tries to intervene but is unsuccessful, and she
ultimately witnesses her sister's murder, thus becoming a threat to the
gang. In order to protect Rain, her mother secretly contacts Rain's
biological mother - who happens to be white, all unbeknownst to Rain. A
meeting is arranged and Rain discovers her true roots: She is the secret
child of a bi-racial union and was then put up for adoption. Rain’s
biological mother reluctantly agrees to protect her, and Rain is placed
in the home of her grandmother, a wealthy white woman. While their
relationship is initially uneasy, with the result of her grandmother’s
assistance, Rain is placed in a private boarding school for the gifted,
which culminates in her emergence as a talented singer and musician.
RAIN is written by world-renown author V.C. Andrews,
the world’s most successfully franchised author.
Review of Rain
If you have ever read a V.C. Andrews
novel, this movie duplicates the same style and delivery as though you
were reading one of her books - a fan of Andrews would recognize her
style almost immediately. The drama, suspense and character
development were all parallel to her books, but I do not know if it is a
inherent flaw of bringing it to the big screen, but the little nuances
of the plot were removed and the ending was fairly predictable
(especially having read the book first). However, even with these
flaws the movie was very enjoyable to watch.
Besides the main story penned by the
masterful V.C. Andrews, it was headed by a very strong cast of past and
present stars who are known for the skills instead of their swagger.
The list includes Faye Dunaway, Robert Loggia, Brooklyn Sudano,
Giancarlo Esposito and Khandi Alexander. Watching
veteran greats such as Dunaway and Loggia working together was one of
the many highlights of this movie. The plot called on many emotions to
be evoked - sadness, loss, happiness, pain, suffering and others, and
each of the actors were believable regardless of thier role.
