Review of Sample Movie

I never read the book, the Painted Veil, by W. Somerset Maugham, which this movie is based upon, but the imagery the author must have created with his words were transformed onto the silver screen.  With a solid script, directed by John Curran and two fabulous actors, this movie becomes both a masterpiece of theater as well as cimematic visual that more than take your breath away.

Love and lust are the two main driving points of this movie.  They are the thrust behind the relationship of Kitty (Naoimi Watts) and Walter (Edward Norton) into a world of danger, beauty and intrigue.  Although both characters are oddly different, it is their unique experiences that will bring them together as in many timeless romances.  In many ways it is the same old story, but it is told in such a beautiful way and brings the viewer into their remote piece of the earth -- as well as transforms us back in time to the 1920s.

Watts and Norton give beautiful performances and do show a certain chemistry between them.  Norton plays his role to the tee, and although Watts is very good, she sometimes does not fit the character she is portraying -- or perhaps that is what the director had intended us to believe.  If the plot does not grip you, the visual aesthetics of the movie should leave you breathless and many nods should go to both the director as well as the makeup/costume department for creating an authentic looking movie.

The Painted Veil is a gem of a movie that is a treasure waiting to be discovered -- and you will not be unhappy with what you find.
