Polar Express (2004)

Plot of Polar Express

When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Director: Robert Zemeckis. Actors: Tom Hanks, Nona Gaye. Critic's Quotes: "Two enthusiastic thumbs way up for 'The Polar Express.'" -Ebert & Roeper, "This train ride is both majestic and edge-of-your-seat." - The Hollywood Reporter / Duane Byrge, "An instant Christmas classic in a league with the original 'Miracle on 34th St.'" Joel Siegel / Good Morning America.

Review of Polar Express

Do you believe?  Do you remember what it was to be a kid and believe in the fantastic?  Can you remember what it was like to believe in what most of us adults know as being unbelievable - just stories told by our elders to make us clean our rooms, be good kids or just to go to bed early on Christmas Eve so mom and pop could enjoy some alone time (and get all of the gifts under the Christmas tree with the "from Santa" tags). This movie can take you back to those days when dreams can come true.

The story is about a young child who starts to lose faith in the story of Santa Clause.  He is not old enough to stop believing, yet young enough to still be a child.  He (Hero Boy) is the child within all of us.  Throughout the movie, we begin to relate to the boy and his friends as they go on an adventure to meet the Prince of the North Pole, the big man himself, Santa Clause. But, like all good Robert Zemeckis films, it is not simple.

To get to the North Pole, one must travel via an old fashioned majestic locomotive named the Polar Express.  This is a train that only those young enough to believe can see, traveling on tracks just outside your home.  The crew of the Polar Express is just as magical as the story itself.  The conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks) is an odd sort.  He is an adult, yet one that is sympathetic to the plight of children once you can see past his ordered straight-forward exterior.  The crew themselves are straight out of a Christmas musical with dancing and singing as entertainment during every meal. The boy befriends three friends who are also on a mission to see Santa.  Along the way, there are a few mishaps, where this young and timid boy overcomes his own insecurities and disbeliefs to perform heroic deeds to help those he has just met.  My favorite character he meets along the way is the train traveling man - who I think represents those fleeting memories or residue of the thoughts and beliefs from our childhood that have not completely faded away.

The whole film is set in ordinary places - a train, mountains, the north pole, made magical by imagination.  The animations and effects are extraordinary.  The faces and expressions of the characters sometimes seem so real you forget you are watching an animated movie.  It is incredible how far they have come in the area of computer generated animation - it is just simply amazing.

Although I write this review from the mind of an adult, it is a movie for the whole family, regardless of age.  Children love the story and are captivated by the action and adventure that the children their own age are experiencing.

This is one movie I would definitely put on your Christmas gift list to Santa.  You can watch it yourself or better yet, with your whole family this Christmas and every year for many Christmases to come.
