Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Year)

Plot of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back! Along with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), Ex-Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) and the crew of the Black Pearl. This time they are on a quest to retrieve The Dead Man's Chest, which contains the still beating heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) in order to free Jack, I'm sorry, Captain Jack, from a promise to Davy Jones that will cost him his soul.

Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

While not quite as intriguing as the first film, as most sequels rarely are, it is entertaining enough. The action and stunts are a little too fast paced and overdone. The filmmakers need to learn that bigger is not always better. The heroes just get out of one mess to get into another, then get out of that one to get into another, etc. The special effects of Dead Mans Chest surpass the first film by a country mile. Between Biill Nighy's performance and the CGI effects, Davy Jones is a treat to watch by himself. One detail that jumps to mind is in one scene the Flying Dutchman is about to dive under the water with the crew standing on deck. It's shot from slightly above and behind Davy Jones and you see some of the smaller tentacles reach up and hold his hat on as they go underwater.  The Kraken was amazing, although you don't really get to see the whole thing until the end. For most of the movie all you see are it's tentacles grabbing crew and breaking masts. The best part was the sound it's suckers made as they rubbed against a windowsill or a door jamb. I can't wait for this to come out on DVD so I can take more time to study each crew members details. As they fulfill their servitude to Jones, they slowly become one with the ship. It's pretty freaky.

I don't think this film was as funny as the first as most of the jokes are rehashed from the first one. And they brought back Pintel and Raghetti, the two oafish pirates from the first film. They don't add anything to the story. They are just there for comic relief and I could've done without them. This will bring me to the casting.

Johnny Depp is once again, terrific as Jack Sparrow. I have read a few other reviews that say he gets tiring by the end of the flick, but I disagree. He is just as entertaining as he was before, and you finally get to see his true colors. I am afraid that as Orlando Bloom makes more movies that it is becoming apparent that he really doesn't have much charisma. Sure, he's nice to look at but I just don't feel that he has the presence to back up those good looks. Keira Knightley's Elizabeth is one of the few characters who show any growth. Once again I cannot tell as it would be considered a spoiler. Watch for the DVD review for that little tidbit as well as the performance of who I feel was the best addition to the cast next to Bill Nighy, lol. Speaking of, Nighy's Davy Jones is perfect. After having seen him in Underworld and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and this, I really like him. I was afraid that with all the CG that 1. His performance would be hidden and 2. They would have put some effect on his voice. But, I my fears were groundless. His voice is perfect as well as his performance. Jack Davenport's Norrington is the character that has changed the most and I must say that I didn't care for him in POTC, but I think he is another of my favorites of this film. He has almost become that which he hates and plays it well. The rest of the returning crew are just as good as they were in the first, with one notable absence - Anamaria, no explanation as to where her character went. There are a few characters that I haven't mentioned as they didn't seem to be that important in this story. That may change with POTC 3, so please don't be pissed that I didn't mention them, lol.

***SPOILERS AHEAD**

***DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE***

This felt more like The Empire Strikes Back as it seems that by the end of the movie the bad guys have the upper hand. Also in the fact that everybody bands together to save Jack, just like the lead up to the rescue of Han in Return Of The Jedi. While I am talking spoilers, I might as well mention Bootstrap Bill plays an integral part to the story. He is a wonderful character and that is all I will say.

***END SPOILERS***

A semi-worthy sequel which successfully does what it set out to do, make you want to see how it all ends. Aside from some other minor misses, such as the confusing as hell dice game, I awill be buying this one on DVD and awaiting part 3. So if you don't see this one in the theater, at least give it a rent. Although if you have taken the time to read this you have either already seen it at the theater or are planning too, lol.

One last thing - Watch for the boots.

Mitch

There are more than these lines but I didn't want it to seem like I was quoting the whole movie, lol.

Best Lines:

Jack Sparrow: [to the Kraken] Hello beastie.

Davey Jones: Do you fear death? Do you fear that dark abyss? All your deeds lay bare, all your sins punished?

Jack Sparrow: Dirt? This is a jar of dirt.

Tia Dalma: Yes...

Jack Sparrow: Is the jar of dirt going to help?

Tia Dalma: If you don't want it, give it back.

Jack Sparrow: [Pulling it closer] No!

Tia Dalma: Den it helps.

Jack Sparrow: How did you get here?

Will Turner: Sea turtles, mate. A pair of them strapped to my feet.

Jack Sparrow: Not so easy is it?

Jack Sparrow: [to Elizabeth about Will who's knocked out] Leave 'im lie... unless you're planning to use him to hit somethin' with.

Elizabeth Swann: It's real!

Norrington: My God. You actually were telling the truth.

Jack Sparrow: I do that quite a lot. Yet people are always surprised.

Will Turner: With good reason.

Lord Cutler Beckett: Every man has a price which he will willingly accept. Even for that which he never wanted to sell.

Davey Jones: Can you live with yourself Jack? Can you live with condemning an innocent man - a friend - to a life of solitude?

Jack Sparrow: Yep, I'm good with it.

Davey Jones: Thirteen years you've been captain of the Black Pearl. That was our agreement.

Jack Sparrow: Technically, I was only captain for two years before I was viciously mutinied upon.

Davey Jones: Then you were a poor captain but a captain none the less!

Tia Dalma: You know I require payment.

Jack Sparrow: I brought payment. Look.

[shoots the monkey]

Jack Sparrow: An undead monkey! Top that!

Tia Dalma: The payment is fair...

Elizabeth Swann: There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing.

Jack Sparrow: I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.
