Pete's Dragon Movie (1977) / High-Flying Edition (2009)

Plot of Pete's Dragon

A boy and his dragon find happiness by overcoming their adversaries.

Review of Pete's Dragon

Pete's DragonIt seems that more and more, I am reviewing movies or DVDs/Blu-Rays of TV shows that I watched in my youth, and once again, Pete's Dragon is no exception.  As a youngster in 1977, I saw the movie for the first time in a theater.  Not only that, the theater was none other than the Radio City Music Hall (thanks aunt Mindy).  It was a really great experience for a kid to see a movie in such a setting.  As such, the movie also had some special personal significance, and never forgot it.  Interestingly enough, I probably only saw it one other time in the past 30 years, and it was probably 20 years ago.  Many of the details of the movie were lost in the recesses of my mind over the years, and in some ways, it was almost like watching a new movie.

The biggest surprise was that I did not remember that the movie was a musical.  I did remember a number of the non-musical scenes, but until today, did not remember the songs (although the melodies and lyrics seemed familiar).  This is surprising because one of the songs from the movie, "Candle On The Water" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.  I also did not remember that there were several stars, such as Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelly Winter and Jeff Conaway, to name a few.  However, it made the re-watching of the movie into an experience almost like watching the movie again for the first time.

The acting by the cast was phenomenal, which is probably a huge reason why the movie has become a Disney classic.  Sometimes a movie, even with great actors, can really be bad because there is no, or little, chemistry.  In this movie, you can both see and hear the chemistry in their acting and singing.  Although not as astonishing to see an animated creature interact with a human, it was still well done with the technology from three decades ago.  It would be great to see what they would have done with the CGIs of today. [Note: This is not an invitation for screenwriters to remake yet another movie -- it would be nice if you guys and gals could come up with something original and not based on a previous movie, book, TV show, character, etc.]

You gotta love Disney for it's packing as much value into a DVD (or Blu-Ray) that it can, and this is no exception.  There are featurettes on creating live-action animation, deleted storyboard sequences, information on the original concepts of songs, original demo recordings, and "pop" re-releases of four of the songs from the movie.

This is a great movie that can be enjoyed by every member of the family and would highly recommend it.
