The Nightmare Before Christmas Collectors Edition
DVD (2008)
Plot of The Nightmare Before Christmas Collectors Edition
The creatures of Holloweentown plan
to steal Christmas and create their own holiday.
Review of The Nightmare Before Christmas Collectors Edition
This
is not going to be a review of Tim Burton's seminal movie The Nightmare
Before Christmas this is specifically for the Collectors Edition DVD set. We already have a review of the movie up (click
here for review), but just to sum it up -- Tim Burton has created an
amazing fantasy world of unique characters intertwined into a wonderful
story of greed, love and romance. When you think animated musical,
scenes of Little Mermaid or other similar films might fill your mind,
but this is different. In fact, when it came time to release the
film, then Disney CEO had them release it under the "Touchtone" name
instead of Disney because Eisner deemed it to be too dark for young
children.
We all know it is a great movie, now onto
the review of the Collector's edition:
Packaging: Very cool. There is
an outer plastic see-through cover that allows you to see a 3D relief of
Jack Skellington inside the box (like a shadow box effect). The
additional cover art is simple and effective. The box opens up to
show the three DVDs that have images upon them of the main characters
from the movie.
Digital enhancement:
If you have the DVD from the original
release you will see a much better and clearer images of the movie.
This was definitely a great improvement over the original DVD, and
enhances the viewing pleasure. You can even better see how great
the stopmotion animation was for this movie.
Bonuses:
Jack's Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour --
Disneyland had converted its original Haunted Mansion ride into a
theme ride for the Nightmare Before Christmas. For the
most part it is the original ride, but instead of the usual ghosts
and ghouls in the mansion, they have espanded it to include a host
of familiar faces from the movie.
Original Poem -- Before Tim Burton
created the movie, he wrote a poem with his ideas. This poem
is very eloquently recited by Christopher Lee with some cool
visuals based on Burton's original concept designs. It
provides some insight on the original ideas for his movie.
Film Commentary -- always one of my
favorite bonus features, and this one does not disappoint. We
are provided with some great stories and details about various
scenes and characters of the movie that truly give us an inside
scoop.
Frankenweenie -- I have to hand
it to Disney and Tim Burton, they know how to promote their stuff.
Burton directed this short film in 1984 which will be created into a
full length feature film. The movie was really cool and now I
am hooked and cannot wait for the movie.
Vincent -- The short film
Vincent is about and narrated by Vincent Price.
Making of -- There is a lot of
footage and information of what went into making the movie -- very
informative.
The Worlds of Tim Burtons NBC -- A very
cool feature that takes you beyond the making of documentary with
screen tests and a few other cool visuals and info about the film.
Deleted scenes -- Always a great
addition to any DVD. You get to see all the added extras that
never made it to the film, or were cut out for times sake.
Although not as extensive as some other movies that do this
specifically to have for the DVD, there are still a few cool tidits
here, including deleted storyboards.
Storyboard to Film Comparison -- This
shows you a storyboard with the actual animation from the movie
below so you can see what the storyboard drawings looked like to
what it translated to on the big screen.
Original Trailers -- always a nice
touch
Digital Copy -- My one dark spot on
this DVD, which may change, is the Digital copy of the movie that
you should be able to download. For some reason, I am not able
to get it uploaded. I will try again after it is officially
released, since that may be the issue and will update this review
accordingly.
So if you already have the movie there are lots of reasons, as listed
above, to get the Collector's Edition for your DVD collection. If you
never purchased the movie, this is the time to do so. Also, there
is a Blu-Ray version available and it also comes with additional bonus
features. This is a great, yes I said, great DVD.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
Tim Burton’s The
Nightmare Before Christmas: Collector’s Edition
is an ingenious and inspired fable that
cleverly mixes Halloween and Christmas for an eerily unexpected holiday
celebration. The film brilliantly combines stop-motion animation with
three-dimensional sets and superb graphics to create a stunningly
original movie experience. With a Grammy®
nominated soundtrack by Oscar®
nominee Danny Elfman (Corpse Bride,
“The Simpsons”), Tim Burton’s
The Nightmare Before Christmas: Collector’s Edition
is a modern holiday classic.
Bored with his perennial role as Halloween
Town's frightening Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington wanders off and
discovers the cheerful village of Christmas Town. Determined to shake
things up in Halloween Town, he enlists the help of some mischievous
trick-or-treaters to kidnap Santa Claus and takes over the job of
delivering gifts to the children of the world himself. When his plan
goes awry, Jack attempts to restore Santa to his rightful place. But
first, he must rescue St. Nick from the clutches of the evil Oogie
Boogie!
