With
her magnifying glass and fingerprint powder in hand, Nancy Drew leaves
River Heights for La-La-Land...but not to meet that guy on Smallville,
as her boyfriend Ned fears. No, she's out to solve one of the greatest
mysteries ever: the death of movie star Dehlia Draycott. But the bigger
mystery is how our perky, plaid-clad sleuth will fit in with the
text-messaging teen queens of mean she meets at Hollywood High.

As
a guy, I did not really read Nancy Drew growing up - I read the Hardy
Boys. However, I did watch a few of the Nancy Drew episodes on the
Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries TV show back in the 70s. So I do have
some basis of knowledge about the character when I watched this movie.
However, I did not expect the character played by
Emma Roberts to act or dress in
such a fashion. Parts of the movie focus around her out-of-date
style of dress and mature manerism, which I do not remember from the TV
show. However, I guess it was something that provided some homage
to the long history of the character which first began as a series of
books in 1930 as outlined by Edward Stratemeyer, but written by Mildred
A. Wirt Benson under the pen name Carolyn Keene. There have been many
other writers of the series over the last 78 years.
It was a cute movie.
Emma Roberts, the star of the hit Nick TV show Unfabulous, did a
very good job in portraying the character, or at least the one I believe
was supposed to be projected. She has just the right air of
maturity and childness to pull it off. The story line was easy to
follow, and had some interesting twists in it. There was a lot of
light humor mixed into the mystery brought about by many of the
side-kick friends and adversaries that contrasted with Nancy Drew's
straight-laced persona. There were not a lot of special effects in
the movie, but there was some car chases and explosions (although I do
not know how she kept clean and her clothing was immaculate after almost
being blown up).
All-in-all it was a good
movie, and I happened to watch it with a pre-teen who cannot wait to
watch it again. Also remember to also see the special features
such as a behind the scenes look in Nancy Drew: Kids At Work, a
gag reel, a music video by Joanna and a cool gallery. They are a
nice addition to this DVD.
