Our Review of The Marlon Brando Collection:
Warner Brothers has put together a good set of five movies that span Brando's career in thier DVD box set, The Marlon Brando Collection. No, the set does not include Streetcar, nor does it include his two Oscar winning roles in On The Waterfront and The Godfather. However, it does include a five good movies with great acting by Brando that span his illustrious career. The set includes Julius Caesar, The Formula, Reflections in a Golden Eye, The Teahouse of The August Moon and Mutiny on the Bounty.
Julius Caesar was one of the big movies early in Brando's career (1953). It gained the young actor his third Best Actor Oscar nomination in as many years. The move show's Brando's raw skill as an actor portraying a character (Mark Anthony) from ancient Egypt. The disk also includes an introduction by Robert Osborne and a nice featurette entitled "The Rise of Two Legends."
The DVD set provides you with some of his later works, such as The Formula (1980). There is some phenomenal acting by Brando opposite George C. Scott in a not so phenomenal movie about the high stakes oil business and the law. Special features include commentaries and a Marlon Brando trailer gallery.
For a glimpse of some romantic magic between two masters of the screen - Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) was a nice add to this collection of movies showing the romantic side of Brando, but also showing the drama in the role he plays as an officer. There is also a cool behind-the-scenes footage special feature on this disk.
Brando may have been known for his serious acting, but he did let his hair down, so to speak, every now and then. In 1956's Teahouse of the August Moon, he show his lighter side in this comedy that takes place in post WWII Japan. The disk also contains a special featurette entitled "Operation Teahouse."
The fifth and final disk of this set fits in perfectly with the other four. It is the classic epic adventure Mutiny on the Bounty (1962). Brando plays Fletcher Christian to the tee in this rendition of the original story and should have been at least given another Oscar nomination for this role. [The movie did receive seven nominations from the Oscar committee, but did not bring home any awards.] It was a great movie, and the two disk special edition in this box set includes numerous special features which are a must see.
This was one DVD set that is definitely worth its while.
