Plot of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning Movie

A young Ariel tries to bring music back to Atlantis while overcoming a new evil enemy and discovering what what music really means to her and the lives of all Atlantians.

Review of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning Movie

Having two young children, I have watched The Little Mermaid an untold number of times.  Although it may not be one of my top movies of all times, it was a nice movie, with a good story line and some great animation.  Disney has tried to recreate that same formula in its straight-to-DVD release of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning.  Having watched the movie, I can say it does not reach the level of the original film, but some of the magic still remains.

The animation and the voice acting is as superb as the first movie and the story line was pretty good although with a level of complexity not seen in the original movie.  There also seemed to be a lot more subplots with mature subtlety for the parent that must watch with their child.  It was enjoyable watching the movie and listening to some of the music, but as I mentioned, this is not destined to be a classic.  The biggest "piece" that was missing from this movie, in my opinion, is the evil villain they created for this movie.  The character of Marina Del Rey is not up to par with any of Disney's other villains. She is nowhere as sinister as Ursula (The Little Mermaid), as evil as Cruella DeVille (101 Dalmatians) or cunning as Scar (Lion King).  On the other hand, this movie did produce some likable sub-characters, like the undersea characters at the Catfish Club and even Marina Del Rey's familiar, a manatee [although doesn't a Manatee a mammal that needs air to breath? - and did you know that early seamen used to confuse seeing manatees with mermaids? - and why does every Disney villain have a familiar].

SPOILER ALERT

I cannot write this review without mentioning the surprising opening scene.  Although this is not the first time one of these movies has killed off a parent of the main character, it was surprising that they placed the scene into this movie (although I guess it was necessary for the motivation of the movie's plot).  The scene was well done, but not as emotional or memorable as the related scene in Bambi.  However, when you think about it, it does explain Triton's real hatred of humans in the original movie.

SPOILER OVER

After watching the movie, I would recommend watching the deleted scenes.  Although your younger ones might not be as interested in it, I found it interesting in watching how determinations are made of what goes and what stays in a movie.  There is also a short interview with director Peggy Holmes and why a new face has been selected to sit in the director's chair.  The games were cute and a nice value add to this already packed DVD.  Then, if you just want to listen to the music, you have that opportunity as well in the music and more bonus section.

This was a really good DVD for a movie that was never on the big screen and your youngster, especially if they are familiar with Ariel, will love it.
