Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

Plot of Letters From Iwo Jima

Letters From Iwo Jima DVD coverLetters from Iwo Jima PictureNominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima tells the untold story of the Japanese soldiers who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactics of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in the taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable." It is the powerful companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers. Critic's Quotes: "Another masterpiece from the remarkable Clint Eastwood."- Pete Hammond/Maxim "Another masterpiece from Clint Eastwood." - Richard Corliss, TIME "Letters From Iwo Jima' stands as one of the great war films of our era." - Claudia Puig/USA Today "A masterpiece. "Richard Roeper/Ebert & Roeper Related Titles: American Pastime; Flags Of Our Fathers; The Good German.

Review of Letters From Iwo Jima

This is perhaps one of the best war movies I have ever seen.  The movie takes a look at World War II from the side of the Japanese, a view that most people around the world do not think about or even consider.  History is written by the winners and often times the losers are forgotten - regardless of their noble intentions.  This movie shows us the struggles some of the Japanese defenders on Iwo Jima went through to defend their land and their country.

The landing of the allied forces on Iwo Jima was supposed to be a quick and fairly easy sorte, however, General Tadamichi Kuribuyashi (played marvelously by Ken Watababe) held his men together to defend the island for almost six weeks -- five weeks longer than anyone had ever expected.

The movie is exceptionally directed by Clint Eastwood who just has an eye for good movies, as well as superb cinematography and writing.  The cast gets three thumbs up for their performances as well.  There are many reasons why this was nominated for a few Oscars, and in my opinion should have won more than just one.

Besides getting a great movie, the DVD also comes with a bunch of other special features, including a "Making of" documentary, a short about the cast of the movie, images from the film and more.  This is a movie I highly recomend to own on DVD.  If you have seen the movie, you know why, if you have not seen the movie be ready to be amazed.
