I couldn't
really see doing an in depth review of this movie. At least not the type
of review I usually do. I read the production notes saying that the
style of the bank was a mirror to Eric's (Jean-Hugues Anglade) decent
into madness. I don't really notice these types of things. All I see is
if I enjoyed a movie or not. To me this movie was really drawn out. It
was 45 minutes before they even got to the bank. I also found that I
didn't really care about the characters. There was hardly any character
development and almost no back story told. Just a few snippets of
conversation here and there.
The other
complaint is the portrayal of drugs in this movie. I prefer my drug use
in movies to lean towards the comedic. Not the dark realistic side of
using and addiction as my step mother died from an overdose when I was
18. As an exercise in filmaking this film was kind of interesting. I
knew something was up when they never showed the police outside
surrounding the bank. Finding out that they had found an abandoned bank
while looking for locations for Reservoir Dogs, Lawrence Bender called
every screenwriter he knew. Eric Avary said he had one and after hanging
up the phone, commenced writing one.
The
casting, well I only know two of the people in the film. Eric Stoltz has
always been a great actor, and Julie Delpy, who I have seen on ER and An
American Werewolf in Paris. While being cute and able to be sexy her
accent masks any bad acting ability I can see. In other words, since I
can barely understand her, I can't tell how good of an actress she is.
This is not
a film I would pick up on my own, and not even one I would recommend to
my friends, unless you like independent films and want to see what can
be done with a movie shot in mainly one location with (what seems to be)
a smallish budget, then check it out. If you are looking for either a
drama, action or a really good movie, pick something else.
Well, I
guess this did turn out to be a longer review than I intended, lol. Well
there you have it. My thoughts on Killing Zoe.
I can't
even think of a slick closing line for this one.
Best Lines:
Zed: What
time is it?
Cab Driver:
Daytime
Zoe: I am
NOT a prostitute!
Zed: That's
great. Can I have my 1000 francs back, then?
