The Illustrated Man (1969)

Plot of The Illustrated Man

Carl (played by Rod Steiger) is a drifter.  However, he is covered from head to toe by mysterious tatoos that tell tales of the future.   Carl is on a quest to find the tattooist who has created such artwork.

Review of The Illustrated Man

The idea for the movie, The Illustrated Man came from a short story written by Sci-Fi legend Ray Bradbury.  The story is about a drifter, his mysterious tattoos and the woman who drew them on him -- it is also about the tattoos themselves and the tales they tell just from looking at them.

Although this movie is almost forty years old, this was the first time I had ever seen it and after watching it, it felt refreshing to watch a movie that had an original story line.  Although the plot is fairly simple, the characters and sub-plot development are complex in many ways.  It is a dark movie, but only to the point where it provides the viewer with the moral of each story and does not take you past the gore and guts of today's "thrillers."  The acting of Rod Steiger is phenomenal in this movie as is Robert Drivas which add to the suspense and intensity of the movie.  Four a movie that was made almost forty years ago, the special effects, and production quality were quite good for that time -- but I emphasize, it came out in 1969.

After the movie, be sure to check out the bonus featurette "Tattooed Steiger" and the theatrical trailer from 1969.  This is a movie for Science Fiction lovers and lovers of movies in general.
