Miracles happen in unexpected places, even on death row at Cold Mountain
Penitentiary. There John Coffey, a prisoner with supernatural powers, brings a
sense of spirit and humanity to his guards and fellow inmates.
Tom Hanks leads a stellar cast (including
Michael Clarke Duncan as Coffey) in this emotional, uplifting story of guards
and captives; husbands and wives; prisoners and a remarkable mouse named Mr.
Jingles; and, on another level, of a moviemaker and his source. Frank Darabont
returns after his 1994 directorial debut The Shawshank Redemption to
adapt another Stephen King tale into a
crowd-pleasing entertainment nominated for four Academy Awards?, including Best
Picture. Director: Frank Darabont, Actors: Tom
Hanks, Patricia Clarkson, Bonnie Hunt, David, Morse,

Clarke, Duncan, James Cromwell.

Said director
Frank Darabont: “I want to thank and acknowledge the fine folks at Warner Home
Video for their incredible support in putting together this special edition DVD
of The Green Mile. I wanted to put the "special" into this special
edition, which meant creating a wide spectrum of ambitious documentary
materials…as well as my setting a record for the amount of time spent recording
a commentary track! Warner's patience and enthusiasm never waned for a moment
throughout this process; their determination to do the job right and give the
fans of the film something truly special easily matched mine. Their dedication
and willingness made the whole thing possible; I doubt many studios would have
given me as much unconditional support as they did. Bless their hearts—they love
the film, and their care and effort show in the final result.”
“We are thrilled
to have worked with Mr. Darabont on this inspiring, compelling motion picture,”
said George Feltenstein, WHV’s Senior Vice President Theatrical Catalog
Marketing. “We should also be thanking the movie’s countless fans, as they’re
the ones who have requested we release the DVD with Darabont commentary and
other features. We’re happy to comply and I’m sure they won’t be disappointed.”
Hailed as one of
the year’s best pictures by more than 50 top critics across the country and
nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Green Mile
is a big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 1996 best-selling serialized novel
which grossed more than $280 million worldwide at the box office and became even
more popular when it moved to video and DVD.
The stellar cast
of The Green Mile includes Tom Hanks (The Da Vinci Code,
Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia), Michael Clarke Duncan (Sin
City, Armageddon) in his Academy Award-nominated role, David Morse (Dreamer,
The Negotiator), Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump), Bonnie Hunt (Cheaper
By The Dozen 2, Return to Me) and James Cromwell (“Six Feet Under,”
L.A. Confidential).
Award-winning
filmmaker Frank Darabont returned to the director’s chair for the first
time in five years to bring The Green Mile, his second King
adaptation, to the screen. His directorial debut, The Shawshank Redemption,
was nominated for seven Academy Awards® including Best Picture. Written by
Frank Darabont from the novel by Stephen King, The Green Mile was
produced by David Valdes.
Synopsis:
The Green Mile
recounts the emotional and uplifting story of Paul Edgecomb (Hanks), a Southern
prison Death Row guard, who develops an unusual and profound relationship with
John Coffey (Duncan), a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair
of nine-year-old sisters. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of
the dark, Coffey seems to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift, which leads
Edgecomb to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of his crime. As the story
unfolds, Paul Edgecomb learns that sometimes, miracles happen in the most
unexpected places.

Review of The Green
Mile: Special Edition DVD
The movie itself was great. I still remember
almost crying (I think a tear did swell in my eye) during one or two very
emotional scenes. The movie itself is dark and emotional. It goes
through a range of very serious emotions in one of the most serious places in
the world - death row.
The movie is based on a story by Stephen King. An
excellent book, but quite a challenge to get onto the big screen. The
Green Mile: Special Edition provides not only the movie, but the magic and
skills of both the actors, film crew, special effects crew and so many more
people to create the masterpiece that is The Green Mile.
The DVD includes a number of special features.
These features are more than worth getting the special edition, even if you
already have the original movie on DVD. Besides a few screen tests and the
theatrical trailers, there is a commentary by Frank Darabont (writer &
director). Then there are the two main features: "Walking the Mile: The
Making of the Green Mile" and "Miracles and Mysteries: Creating The Green
Mile." Both of these documentaries are excellent to say the least.
They cover all aspects of the movie from the making of the movie to the actors
in the movie even to a short about Mr. Bojangles. If you liked the movie,
these features will even enhance your experience even more the next time you
watch it.
