The Good German (2006)

Plot of The Good German

Tobey Maguire PictureThe Good German DVD CoverWho knows what American journalist Jake Geismer (George Clooney) expected to find in postwar Berlin? Peace, maybe. Or at least a story. But certainly not Lena (Cate Blanchett), his beautiful, embittered one-time love. And not the trail of secrecy and deception that leads from Lena to the scheming young corporal (Tobey Maguire) who's her new lover...and to a murder no one seems interested in solving. Except Jake. Steven Soderbergh directs three of today's top talents in this zigzag thriller that's both an atmospheric homage to 1940s filmmaking and a deft modern film noir. The Good German is "haunting and hypnotic, it's pure moviegoing bliss" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).

Burbank, CA, April 20, 2007– Experience a modern vision of the golden age of Hollywood with a breathtaking espionage thriller as The Good German arrives on DVD May 22 from Warner Home Video.  Director Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney team up once again to recreate a post-war tension that will take you back to a bygone era in both history and film.

The Good German takes place in post World War II Berlin where U.S. Army war correspondent Jake Geismer (George Clooney) crosses paths with former lover Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett) and becomes immersed in a manhunt for Lena’s missing husband.  As Jake looks to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance, he must also draw secrets from Lena that likely serve as pieces to the puzzle.

Jake’s driver Tully (Tobey Maguire) also proves himself to be a keeper of secrets as the American soldier’s questionable associations may spell danger for Jack and Lena.  In a country ravaged by war and struggling to rise from the ashes, Jake soon discovers that unearthing the truth may prove to be far too daunting a task.

The Good German is directed by Academy Award Winner Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Twelve, Traffic), and features stunning performances by Academy Award Winner George Clooney (Syriana, Good Night, Good Luck), Academy Award Winner Cate Blanchett (Babel, The Aviator), and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man 2, Seabiscuit).

The Good German will be available on DVD in standard version presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition for $27.95 SRP.

Review of The Good German

The Good German displays many of the features of a great film. No, you will not find stop-frame pictures, computer animations or multi-million dollar effects.  However, what you will find is pure movie magic - the stuff that this industry was build upon -- a good story, a great director and a few extremely talented actors.  While watching the movie, I got the feeling of watching some of the old movies from the 1940s and 1950s, not just because of the time period of the subject matter, but because of the look and feel of the movie and cinematography itself.

Steven Soderbergh directs his best movie yet with fantastic acting by Academy Award winning actors George Clooney and Cate Blanchett along with a out-of-character, yet delightful job by Tobey Maguire.  Together, this cast provides the icing on the cake of an already well written suspense thriller.
