Review of Fail Safe

When the movie first aired on TV, I heard about it, but did not actually watch it.  I figured it was just another remake of an old movie based on a theme we have seen over and over again.  Although the cast did seem intriguing, it was not compelling enough to watch (or tape) compared to other things going on in my life at the time.  Today I was able to watch the film for the first time and I am glad I did.

At first I thought I had the wrong movie.  The screen was black and white and when I recognized the modern actors, I thought it must be my TV.  I then read the back cover of the DVD box and discovered that this is done intentially to add to the drama of the story.  Although it got some getting used to at first, the black-and-white images did add that air of suspense missing from some of today's movies.

I did know that the acting was performed live, in real time.  I am not sure if this did enhance the actor's performances by making the circumstancs seem real, or if the superb cast of characters just did what they are so good at.  The cast is amazing, just look at the line up: Richard Dryfuss, Noah Wyle, George Clooney, Hank Azaria, Harvey Keitel, Brian Dennehy and more.  Their performances were stellar.

For drama and suspense this movie is at the top of the heap and even compares to the the original 1964 it was based on.  For contrast, I my watch Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Love the Atomic Bomb with Peter Sellers to really understand the political nuances of the time.  Fail Safe is definately a movie worth watching.
