This is a great collection
of the works of Barbara Stanwyck that includes some of her best works.
Stanwyck is a great actress that has been nominated for four Academy
Awards, as well as winning an honorary award by the Academy. This
collection shows the diverse nature of her abilities as an actress in
movies such as Executive Suite (1954 - nominated for 4 Academy
Awards); Annie Oakley (1935 - one of her early movies, and one of
my favorites); My Reputation (1946 - a classic romance between a
widow and a handsome military man); East Side, West Side (1950 -
A strange love quadrangle with Stanwyck in the mix); To Please a Lady
(1950 - Pairs up Stanwyck with the legendary
Clark Gable); and Jeopardy
(1953 - one of her lesser known film-noir thrillers).
Although Barbara Stanwyck
never did with that Oscar for Best Leading Lady, being nominated four
times is quite amazing. Add to that her 3 Emmys, and other awards,
she had a pretty amazing career in TV and in the movies.
Interestingly enough, my favorite movie starring Stanwyck is Annie
Oakley, which (for me) luckily is included in this collection.
I guess it is because I remember watching it when it occasionaly was
shown on TV. then my mother purchased a VHS copy of the movie. As a kid
it was enjoyable, and watching it again years later I can still enjoy
the movie. This, as well as the other movies in this set were
reproduced very nicely. Annie Oakley, for instance, was a lot
clearer in sight and sound than I had remembered it from years ago.
One of my other favorite movies in this set is Executive Suite.
Besides Stanwyck, there were a number of other great performances in
this movie including William Holden, June Allyson, Frederick March and
Shelley Winters. The writing, direction (by Robert Wise), and everything
else about the movie is just fantastic. The other movies are also
very good, and place her up with some interesting co-stars such as
George Brent, James Mason, Eva Gardner and Clark Gable. I had
never see Jeopardy before today, but I was pleasantly surprised,
and wondered why that movie never recieved more attantion.
Besides the movies, the
collection is full of bonus features, such as a must see commentary by
Oliver Stone regarding Executive Suite. There are also a few other
treats such as vintage cartoons (which I always enjoy) and old short
movies, as well as radio shows on My Reputation and Jeopardy.
A classic collection of movies from a movie legend (and at a great price
for six movies). |
