The fire of Barbra Streisand. The magnetism of Kris Kristofferson. The reckless world of big-time rock 'n' roll. All three bring a new passion and timeliness to A Star Is Born, one of the screen's classic love stories (previously filmed in 1937 and 1954) and winner of five Golden GlobeO Awards, including Best Picture, Actress and Actor (Musical/Comedy). Paul Williams, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell and others worked with Streisand on one of the most popular song scores ever, topped by the Streisand/Williams "Evergreen" winning the Academy AwardO and Golden Globe Award as 1976's Best Original Song. Their teamwork resulted in a box-office triumph as well as "a considerable achievement" (Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical). Director: Frank Pierson. A Star Is Born was nominated for four Academy Awards® and won five Golden Globes®, including Best Picture, Actress, Actor and Original Score. Paul Williams, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell and others worked with Streisand on the popular song score, topped by the Streisand/Williams hit “Evergreen” which won both the Oscar® and Golden Globe® as Best Original Song.
The story centers around rock star John Norman (Kristofferson) whose career has peaked. One night, after a concert, he stumbles into a club where he sees a singing group fronted by young singer Esther Hoffman (Streisand). The two quickly fall in love, although Esther has trouble with John's rock star lifestyle. One night, a typically burned-out John lets Esther sing a few songs at one of his shows and before long she's the talk of the record business. While Esther's star begins to rise, John's continues to sink, and while she desperately tries to help him clean up and focus on his music, it may be too late to save him.
The 1937 version of A Star Is Born, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, captured seven Academy Award nominations and won one (Best Screenplay); the 1954 version, with Judy Garland and James Mason, was nominated for six Oscars.
Our Review of A Star Is Born (1976)
This is a remake of the classic A Star Is Born from 1954 starring Judy Garland and James Mason that was nominated for six Oscars, which was a remake of a version first filmed in 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (winning seven Academy Awards). This movie lived up to that level of cinema excellence with four Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe wins, not to mention the song "Evergreen" from the movie that won an Oscar.
The pair of Streisand and Kristofferson was phenomenal in this movie. The movie is about the two actors. Kristofferson plays a musician who's career is sputtering, while Streisand is the hot new act on the rise. He helps her career move on, while his own career dives further downward. Along the way, the two fall in love. It is a movie of that combines a good story, good acting and exceptional singing (something that is missing from many of today's movies).
As if the movie isn't enough, the DVD also includes some exceptional features, such as a commentary by Barbara Streisand, additional scenes, a remastered soundtrack, a trailer gallery and a must see wardrobe tests. If you haven't seen it since it originally came out thirty years ago, it is long past due to see it again.
