Review of
101 Dalmatians: Platinum Edition
|
|
I have seen this movie
countless times over the years and have always enjoyed the simple, yet
richly developed story about a dog and his family (both human and
canine). The movie, based on a book by Dodie Smith (The
Hundred and One Dalmatians) provides a tale of how a dog and his
master grow their family, first by finding their female counterparts and
growing a family. However, due to a wild tale and twist of fate,
the family grows from a small family into one of 101.
The most intriguing part of the story is that it is told from the dogs
point of view, and many of these lovable creatures are given their own
personalities. You find yourself in the mind of man's best freind,
going on a four legged adventure. These lovable critters are very
likable and you cheer them on throughout the movie.
As cute and cuddly as the Dalmatian pups can be, their nemesis is a
complete opposite in nature and design. She's not just bad, she's drawn
that way as well. Cruella De vil, the evil darkness that lurks
over the canines and their masters is brilliantly drawn and voice acted
and may very well be one of the most hated villans in movie history --
how many other villans can claim a song written about them? Not
Darth Vader, not Frankenstein, not even the Creature From The Black
Lagoon, but Cruella's got one, and with a very catchy beat as
well. Well for a good movie, you need both a yin and a yang
to counterbalance each other, and she is undeniably the opposite of what
is good in the world.
I need not tarry longer on the story since most of you have probably
seen it if not once, but twice or more times. If you have not seen
it since your your youth, this is one of those great movies that you
will not mind watching time and time again with your own children (okay,
maybe by the 50th time you might want them to watch something else).
I would also suggest watching it at least once using the pop-up edition.
I reviewed the movie using this feature and there were many interesting
facts that I learned (although the pop-ups could have been a little
smaller, or placed further over to the sides). I am a big fan of these
pop-ups and this was a nice add-on to a movie I have seen many times
before. I have an old VHS copy of the movie and the sound and
visuals on this DVD are a hundred times better thanks to the restoration
they did for this release.
Since Disney has dubbed this the "Platinum Edition," they had to give us
more than just the enhanced music/video and the pop-ups and they did not
disappoint. This DVD edition is chock full of some great bonuses.
My favorite is the featurette "Cruella De Vil: Drawn to Be Bad" which is
all about the creations and animation of Disney's most feared
villainess. That is not to take anything away from the other
features, including the standard "making of" documentary that was quite
interesting and full of facts and "Sincerely Yours, Walt Disney" which
is about the correspondence between Mr. Disney and the author of the
book, Dodie Smith.
This version also includes some games which are kind of fun (I matched
best with Goofy), and an awesome selection of deleted and abandoned
songs that are a must to listen to and watch. The trailers are
pretty cool to watch as well.
Then there is the great new bonus video featuring Selena Gomez with her
jazzed up version of Cruella De Vil which is tastefully done by one of
today's most promising young talents which highlight young miss Gomez on
a runway as well as scenes from the movie.
This is a great feature DVD from Disney which you and your children
should not miss. |
