-
Rosa Parks (born Rosa
McCauley) was born on February 4, 1913.
-
In 1932, she married
Raymond Parks. They remained married until his death in 1977.
-
In the racially
segregated South (in America), Rosa, a black woman, took a stand
against segregation (on December 1, 1955) and quietly refused to
give her bus seat (at the front of the bus) to a white man and move
to the back of the bus which was designated for black people.
-
She was arrested for her act. However, that was not the end. The
news of her heroic act spread throughout the city which led to the Montgomery
Bus Boycott. Through peaceful demonstrations and boycotting the transit
system, they ended segregation in the Montgomery bus system -- and this sparked
boycotts and rallies around the country, eventually leading to the end of
"official" segregation around the country.
-
In 1993, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
-
In 2000, she won an award for her acting - an Image Award for Outstanding
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for an appearance as herself in an episode
of Touched by an Angel entitled "Black Like Monica."
-
In 1999, she received the highest award that could be given to any American -
the Congressional Medal of Honor.
-
This heroic American passed away on October 25, 2005 at the age of 92 in her
Detroit home.
