I decided
to review these movies because of a thread started in the Movie Buffs of
the World Unite group: HTTP://groups.myspace.com/shaunberk
. And we didn’t have anything better to do Wednesday night since there
was no new Lost.
Plot – A
father (Hoyt Axton) gets a cute and cuddly creature called a Mogwai for
his son as a Christmas present. There are three rules for the care
taking of a Mogwai.
-
Keep them away from
bright light.
-
Keep them away from
water.
-
Never, ever feed them
after midnight.
His son
Billy (Zach Galligan) doesn’t follow these rules and gets into trouble.
The creatures multiply and become nasty, mean spirited little f***ers
led by Stripe. They go around town killing people and causing general
mayhem. It’s up to Billy and Kate (Phoebe Cates) to stop them.
I first saw
this movie at a drive-in theater when I was 10. My father scared the
s*** out of me and my step-brother by grabbing us during a very tense
scene. That was pretty much what I remember about the experience. So
re-watching was a lot of fun, for the technology they had then it holds
up real well. I only saw one set of strings and my wife had to point
them out to me. It is a much darker film than I remember, the whole
kitchen fight scene between the gremlins and Billy’s mother was quite
gruesome, as well as Stripe’s death.
The casting
was pretty good although I was too young to care who was who when this
came out and I still have that feeling now as it has been out for so
long. Phoebe Cates is cute as always and I just wanted to give her a hug
when she explained why she doesn’t celebrate Christmas. Hoyt Axton has
the perfect voice to narrate this as well as portraying a believable
wanna be inventor. Frances Lee McCain does a great job as Lyn Peltzer.
When the Gremlins take over her kitchen she goes all Rambo on them and
it’s quite funny in a disgusting sort of way.
I wouldn’t
let younger kids watch this but its fine for 13 and up. Watch it with
your kids and relive your first time watching it. There is only one line
in my eyes worth mentioning as a best line. I don’t count Gizmo’s lines
because by the halfway point I was wishing he would just shut up. His
squeaking and cooing just got on my nerves. Anyways here is that one
line.
Deputy
Brent: Let me drive.
Sheriff Frank: No, you're drunk.
Deputy Brent: You always get to drive.
Sheriff Frank: That's cause I'm the sheriff, a**hole.
