Career
Early on, Federline worked as a backup dancer for
Christina Milian, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Michael Jackson, and the band LFO,
future wife Britney Spears' opening act. Federline would later co-star with
Spears on the 2005 reality television show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, which
consisted of home videos shot by the couple. He also appeared in the 2004 movie,
You Got Served.
Federline has been signed to model for the Five
Star Vintage line by the San Francisco-based Blue Marlin clothing company. The
initial series of ads is set to run in September 2006. When asked if Federline's
role was permanent, he said, "We have to see how this first ad campaign goes."
After being introduced by his visibly pregnant
wife, Federline performed his first "official" single titled "Lose Control" as
the final act of the 2006 Teen Choice Awards. Federline was nominated in another
category (Teen Choice Award for Male Red Carpet Fashion Icon) though he did not
win. Federline's music performance on the Teen Choice Awards was widely panned
by the hip hop community, as echoed by Elliot Wilson, chief editor of XXL
Magazine: "I just think we ignore him. He's a joke, basically. ... I just don't
think he gets it. He doesn't get that he's Britney's man and it's hard to take
him seriously."[1] Federline's previous single, "PopoZão," released on New
Year's Day, 2006, received a similar chilly response, with Entertainment Weekly
stating that PopoZão was worse than expected, while music trade magazine
Billboard echoed that the song was “a monument to mediocrity.”[2]
Federline will release his album, Playing With Fire
on his own record label "Federation Records", which will be distributed through
Sony BMG.
Federline will make his television acting debut in
an episode of CSI that will air in October. He also is to appear in three
episodes of Entourage.
Personal life
Kevin Federline is noted for his marriage to
Dance-pop singer and songwriter Britney Spears. Federline was previously
involved in a relationship with actress Shar Jackson, with whom he has two
children. Their daughter, Kori, was born on July 31, 2002, and their son, Kaleb,
was born on July 20, 2004. He has had two additional children with Spears, Sean
Preston (born on September 14, 2005) and Sutton Pierce (born on September 12,
2006).
While Federline and Jackson were awaiting the birth
of their second child, Federline met Spears at a Hollywood club called Joseph's
in April 2004. Following this, Spears told People,
We stayed with each other for a week. I was
supposed to get on a plane to go on tour. I told my mom I didn't want to go on
tour. I was like, "I want to stay in L.A." At the time, I didn't think he'd come
with me because we'd just met. Then I was supposed to get on a plane. Then I
canceled my flight. I turned the car around, called Kevin and said, "Where are
you at?" The next week I was like, "Kevin, get your passport and come out with
me."
After Spears invited him on the European leg of her
The Onyx Hotel Tour, they spent a little over a month abroad, and she proposed
to him on the plane ride back to New York, from Ireland. Federline initially
said no. He told People that, "It wasn't like a "Will you marry me?" It wasn't
that straightforward. The way she said it was kind of beating around the bush.
Still, I was taken by surprise. I thought the guy was supposed to ask the girl.
So a couple of minutes went by and then I asked her."
Regarding Federline and Spears' relationship, Shar
Jackson has stated, "it wasn't like just breaking up a relationship. It was like
breaking up a family."[3]
[Added by PSP 11/8/06: Britney Spears filed for
divorce from Federline. - added 1/1/07 - He will be doing a TV commercial during
the SuperBowl where he is flipping burgers at a fast food restaurant. Many
fast food employees are insulted by this.]
Public
reception
Federline has been the subject of ridicule on
television and on the World Wide Web by the likes of late night talk show hosts
Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno, and E! cable channel's The Soup. He's also been made
fun of by the animated series Family Guy, the website Fark.com, MadTV, and
Saturday Night Live.
Federline has also become notorious in the media
for his heavy smoking, and was criticized for continuing to do so around his
pregnant wife. He is often photographed with a cigarette in hand.
