The host

By Stephenie Meyer

[Contest at Bottom of Page]

On May 6th Hachette Book Group is poised to unleash the new sci-fi love story from the #1 New York Times Best Selling author of the TWILIGHT series Stephenie Meyer entitled THE HOST on the patiently waiting public

Synopsis:

The Host by Stephenie MeyerOur world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

One of the most compelling writers of our time, Stephenie Meyer brings us a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the very essence of what it means to be human.

Our Review of The Host

This, being my first foray into the world of the young talented author Stephenie Meyer, was a pleasant journey that I hope to take again.  Her writing deeds have preceded this work and I had already had great expectations of the novel even before opening the cover.

Knowing only that Meyer was a talented writer and the book was a science fiction, I had no idea in what direction the novel might turn, nor did I even expect where it would have begun.  The beginning in a sense is the beginning of the end of humanity – or at the very least human kind.  The earth was losing a war against an unseen enemy that did not attack the body, but the soul.  The alien enemy existed by taking over the bodies of their “victims.”  They called themselves “souls,” but were more.  They inserted themselves inside a person and took over their bodily functions and eventually their thoughts.  Most people tried to fight the hostile invader, but most succumbed to their host.   This is not only a great imaginative opening plot to a story, but it also makes one think about one’s life and own humanity of what it is that makes a person who they are. This question then gets more complex as we meet our heroines of the story and the plot thickens to even greater levels.

Melanie, a human of extraordinary character with both a strong mind and strong will is hunted down and eventually is inserted with an alien being called the Wanderer.  Although the Wanderer, in essence is a parasite in Melanie’s body and consciousness, is not able to gain control of the mind and soul of its host.   Melanie will not succumb to the invader and eventually the two begin to almost coexist within the same body.  The alien invaders are able to feel the emotions and see the memories of their host bodies and Melanie has a number of very strong emotions that she forces upon the Wanderer.  Many of these emotions relates to her former lover who was separated from her when they were hiding from the invaders.  The Wander becomes so interlocked with these emotions that it also begins to have feelings towards this human as well.  The two minds in the single body then go out and try to find the man they “both” love.  Once again, Meyer raises questions of not only the status of the human existence, but of the power of emotions, such as love.  I have also not even begun to discuss the possibility of such an entity to actually exist.

This book is highly recommended to fans of the science fiction genre.  Meyer is an extremely talented writer that not only has the ability to paint the scenes and the actions of the players in her story, but also provide the essence of the wide range of feelings of the emotions these characters are experiencing throughout the novel.  She has a brilliant mind for what science fiction means by going beyond the realm of possibilities and bringing the reader into a different time, place and even dimension as Rod Serling would have put it.
