"Slash"Slash with Anthony Bozza "It Seems Excessive . . . But That Doesn't Mean It Didn't Happen"
You travel through the life of this rock legend from the day he was freed from his uvular beginnings through the present time. The book highlights what he considers to be the turning points of his life, or those crossroad events that have transformed his body, mind or soul to move in new directions either unknown, unexpected, or in ways that he did not necessarily want to follow. He discusses these events in what he considers "profound" thoughts to examine in hindsight what was occurring at the time, both around his physical presence and within his mind's eye. In many of the chapters we hear of his exploits of drug and sex. Many of these occurrences are casually brushed over -- such as a particular threesome he had one night, but a few of these sexual encounters and particularly their consequences are stated in more detail. The excess of booze and drugs is also a prevailing theme throughout the book, and sometimes makes for enjoyable tales. Slash's rise to fame is due in large part to his association with Guns-n-Roses. Obviously a great many of his stories discuss his relationship with the band and its members, such as its flamboyant bad boy lead singer Axel Rose. Two of the significant life changing occurrences highlighted are the formation and break-up of the band. It is interesting to note when reading the chapters relating to the break-up what his recollection of the events were, and the emotional turmoil that was going through his mind as the end of the band came to pass. The end of the band was not the end of Slash. The last few chapters go into how he coped with the post-mortem affects of the Guns-n-Roses dynasty, and how he has tried to move beyond it and find a niche for himself not only in the world of rock n' roll, but in the mundane day-to-day realities of the human race. The book was an interesting read that allows you to visit with the life of one of rock's greatest guitarists. The autobiography enlightens you on what inspires a person or band to create greatness (e.g., the intricacies, thoughts and events hiden behind the writing of the hit "Welcome To The Jungle"). The book also confirms to the rest of us that Sex, Drugs, Rock n' Roll is not just a fairly tale told to those outside of the industry, but it is truly a way of life. |
