Our Review of the Batman Beyond, Season Two
Most of us have seen Batman and have read the comic. Over the decades since the first appearance of Batman in the famous Detective Comics #27, the character has evolved. This series takes the world of Batman and brings it to an all new level - and time.
The focus of the series is not on the Bruce Wayne/Batman character, but on a young protégé named Terry McGinnis. The first season established the relationship between Bruce and Terry and their fight against the evil world of the corporate empires. This second season explores Terry and his life as a high school teenager as he fights crime in the future. After the campy (although interesting) opening, the story lines of each episode is solid. Not only do they capture your attention, but you also become engaged in the story lines. The characters become almost real and you actually begin to feel for Terry and what he is going through in his personal life.
The world has the same gothic feel as in the Dark Night series with a fresh look at some old characters mixed with a new breed of bat. Terry in many ways (I think purposely) is like what Bruce Wayne would have been if there was a "Batboy" or "Teenage Bat." Most story lines about Batman did not follow that path because he was paired up with the Teenage Wonder - Robin. Terry is not Robin, he is more like what Bruce would have been as a teenager.
There are three great features with this DVD collection. Two of the features are commentaries on the first episode of the season (Splicers) and the episode that won them an Emmy (Eggbaby). It is interesting to hear them comment on the story lines and the actors that did the voiceovers. It is also interesting to note why Eggbaby was chosen to send to the Emmy Awards for review (you will have to see the DVD to find out). The other feature, moderated discussion of season two between the producers of the show in Inside Batman Beyond, is also a cool addition. You begin to understand what was going on in the minds of the producers when they created these episodes and why they took certain twists and turns in the story lines and sub plots.
Although I have seen all of these episodes, it was great to relive the action and adventure (in cartoon form) of Terry and Bruce as they fight crime in the futuristic Gothom City. I always enjoy when I get to see a series like this in chronological order because it was as much a serial as it was an animated TV series series.
