Review of Underage Thinking: Look Where We Are Now

First, the basics about the album -- Teddy Geiger is still a fairly new artist that has gained a large following of Ted Heads around the country and especially around his home base of New York.  He released his debut album “Underage Thinking” at the beginning of 2006, which had mild commercial success, but received great reviews and many fans.  He has released a special edition of his debut called “Underage Thinking: Look Where We Are Now.”  The two disk special edition includes the original tracks on the first disk along with some remixes and original demos.  The second disk is a DVD and includes music videos, short “making of” videos, some interesting home videos and a photo scrapbook.

Now, if you have never heard Teddy before, be ready to be shocked.  He was only sixteen-seventeen when he recorded the album and looks fairly young on the album cover, but when you begin to listen you hear a very mature voice in melody to the words of a poet.  His sound is raw.  It is a combination of contemporary rock, classic 70s rock and hints of blue grass and R&B.

The songs are soulful, not in a Ray Charles sort of way, but because you can hear the soul of his heart and mind in the music.  Just listen to the track “Gentlemen,” “Underage Thinking” (my favorite track on the album) or the opening track “These Walls” and you will know what I mean.  Some of the tracks do take on a more “poppier” sound like in “A Million Years.”  After listening to the album a few times, the one song that keeps playing in my mind (even as I write this) is “For You I Will” which is meaningful love ballad with a catchy tune.  But when it comes down to it, the reason why I like the album is his voice.  It is the right sound for the songs and vice-versa.

If you can get the CD, it is interesting to listen to the original demos to see what has changed between the time they were first recorded and the album was ultimately released.  For that extra bonus, you can watch the videos, including one that features Kristin Cavalleri as his love interest. This album was a great addition to my collection and will be listened to again.
