No Introduction (2008)

Tyga

Decaydence Records

Review of No Introduction

Contrary to the album’s title, the first track does its job as an introduction, because let's face it—most of us have not heard of Tyga. There's nothing special about the first single, “Coconut Juice.” It's your average party-mood inducing song with lyrics about drinking on a simple if catchy beat. If you're a Gym Class Heroes fan, let it be known that we get nothing more than a teaser from Travis McCoy, Tyga’s so-called “cousin”. The rapper serves upbeat tracks like “Supersize Me”, which is Tyga’s take on the ever-popular “I’m so fly” theme, congratulating himself on a job well done.

The track reeks of new money and the conceit that goes along with that, which is not uncommon for a rapper’s debut album these days. Don’t get it wrong, though—Tyga’s “No Introduction” is not without some substance. “2 AM” goes to show that tales of a troubled childhood can contribute to good music. On a less serious note, “First Timers” offers a wise look at teenage love—the rapper actually acknowledges that it is puppy love. While the affection is real in some sense, he does not deny that it is powered by lust and should not be taken completely seriously. This is different from the slew of other songs artists have made proclaiming each and every breakup a heart-breaking tragedy. “AIM” recalls Gym Class Heroes’ “New Friend Request,” but in reverse: Tyga is the one being persistently pursued via technology. It’s not bad for a first album; more highly-esteemed artists have started off with less creative efforts.

Fans of the genre will probably end up with at least one or two songs on repeat on the Ipod.
