You Don't Know Jacq (2008)

Jacqui Taylor

Ruby Star Records

Review of You Don't Know Jacq

If you don't know Jacq, maybe you should.  Jacqui Naylor has an amazing voice with qualities of those that we remember from the past.  With a bit of a raspy voice, such as Janice Joplin, she turns classic songs into jazz masterpieces.   Usually I dislike outtakes of old songs, however, Naylor maintains the essence of the song, while adding her own touch to them.

For instance, in the album, You Don't Know Jacq, she takes some great songs, or just popular songs, and places her own spin to them. This includes songs that I would never have even considered to be used in a jazz-like beat. For instance, take "Black Coffe" by Squeeze.  This is a song that one would think, just does not lend itself to really any other genre than its pop-rock sound.  However, Naylor molds the song and does her magic and the song comes out exceptionally well.  I have listened to it a few times so far, and it gets better with each  Although there are some songs that did not take as much of a stretch to be given a turn of genres, such as "Losing My Religion: by R.E.M. Then there is a really cool version of the Stone's "Miss You."

Jacqui Naylor does not only bring us the cover songs on the album, but also shows us her talents recording original songs which are co written by Art Khu.  They are, of course, all Jazzish type songs, but they are all very good and could even compare to many of the the classic songs from the great age of Jazz music.

Some the stuff she does is just amazing and I would suggest giving it a listen.
