Myths of the Near Future (2007)

The Klaxons

Geffen Records

Review of Myths of the Near Future

"Isle of Her" is the one song from this album that I cannot get out of my head.  What is strange is that I did not like the song the first time through.  However, it seemed to grow on me, along with the whole album.  I must admit that when I first heard the name of the band, Klaxons, I was thinking Heavy Metal from the British Isles . . .  Cool. Well I guess I must have had some reminiscence of my experiences with the 80s (maybe I was thinking about Saxon?), but heavy metal it is not.  My first impression of the album was 80's new-wave music.  What I think is happening is that a lot of today's bands are looking for something different.  Instead of going heavier, they are starting to experiment with different sounds and effects, which is something that was positive about the 80's English Invasion.

This album shows the bands willingness to experiment with different sounds, instruments and vocals.  Take the song "Magick," for instance, the band is not afraid to use different percussions and electronic sounds to mesh together the song and vocals.  In some aspects the song reminds me of some of the experimentation some bands did in the mid and late sixties. Although, this is not up to the level of Pink Floyd, there are some qualities of their earlier albums that can be heard throughout the album.

Each song seems to be apart and separate from each other. They each have their own sound and focus.  For instance, "It's Not Over Yet," follows "Magick" and has a completely different sound, beat, instrumental and vocals.  Better yet, both songs are actually good in their own way.

The Klaxons definitely have a fresh sound, or it is probably better to say that they have a lot of really good fresh sounds on this album and should become one of the hottest bands in no time.
