Madeline (2008)

Tickle Me Pink

Wind-Up Records

Review of Madeline

Tickle Me Pink is a band that has load of talent.  Starting with the vocals, Sean Kennedy has a wonderful voice, maybe not that of a Frank Sinatra, but one which is pleasing to the ears for both the mild chords as well as the louder ones as well.  However, the vocal talents do not stop with Kennedy, the backup vocals by Johnny Schou and Steven Beck provide a well tuned chorus of sounds.

Tickle Me Pink has been makings its rounds through the club circuit and has been gaining a cult following and the Madeline album is just a sample of this bands capabilities.  Although the sound is under of the all-encompassing title of "alternative rock," they break out of that mold on many occasions.  At times they are more grungy-metal than rock, and at other can even be called folksy with a touch of classic rock.

The songs throughout the album are very solid in sound and substance.  The tracks were produced very well (a rare compliment from me) in that they were able to highlight the vocals or instruments at the right time so that the various sounds are combined into a melody instead of a war of noise.  Besides enjoying the vocals as mentioned above, I was also very impressed with the talent of the band on their instruments -- they actually played.  This is a rare feat in today's music where many band members just bang or strum away without any real expertise.

In addition to the CD, there is also a bonus DVD that includes film footage of the band performing all of these songs live.  This was a really nice addition and shows that the band has energy and a stage presence while live.  Although the whole show was "staged" specifically for the filming, it was still showed that the band is not just a studio wonder, but can also really supply fans the music and energy even in a live setting.
