Let's
start this review by looking at the cover of the album. When I took my
first glance at the cover, I immediately received a feeling of déjà vue. The way
the album art was set out and the water in the background with the characters
floating underneath gave me a flashback of seeing
Nirvana's
Nevermind for the first time. I do not know if it is
the lighting, or just the underwater theme that brings back images of that
seminal album, but it was just eerie. When we look at the album we see the
four members of the group all floating underneath. Are these depicting
images of death or a resurrection of life? It is something to think about
when listening to the lyrics of the tracks and how they interrelate to the title
of the album --
Life Left Us Go. As it turns out, I we happened to
have been able to ask
SafetySuit
a few
questions,
including the meaning of the album for which they responded: "
Life Left To Go is actually the name of the last track on the
record. It’s a song that speaks to someone who is contemplating
ending their life and basically says, “I see you, hold on,
there’s more life left to go.” Don’t give up… it’s a good
message; why not name the record after it?" So, as it
turn out the album is more about the sanctity of life than it is about the
darker side of death and suicide. Is there a correlation with
Kurt Cobain's tragic end and their message of
hope and life? I do not know - but it is something to thing about while
listening to this album.
So now for the music -- The high points of the album
include the deep and thought provoking lyrics, the melodic mood of their music
and the production value of the tracks. There are some very good tracks,
such as "Gone Away" and the lead track "Someone Like You," and "Life Left You
Go" but I cannot honestly say that I enjoyed all of the offerings on this CD.
I know that with their first major album they want to make sure that the song
list includes songs with meaning, songs with depth and for the record company,
songs that have a mass appeal to old and potential fans. However, as a
fledgling band, some of the songs seem to be lacking that little something to
make them something special -- although from song one to twelve, there are not
any songs that are bad. With a little more maturation, they can easily
overcome this. Sometimes it is evening out the tempo to the vocals or
blending in the instruments so they do not sometimes sound like a mish-mash of
noise, such as in "Something I Said." I think that it is a very good song,
but sometimes the background instrumentals seem to drown each other out instead
of compliment each other.
This is a group that has the potential to go very far. Doug Brown has
the vocals to take them their and the rest of the band most of the time seems to
meld very well together. If you were wondering, "Anywhere But Here" is my
favorite song on this album both musically and lyrically.
SafetySuit is a group to keep your eyes on and this album is just a
beginning.
