James Brown Number Ones (2007)

James Brown

Chronicles/Universal

Review of James Brown Number Ones

Coincidently, a few days before I received this CD to review, I read an interesting article about James Brown. The author discussed two concerts that he attended, one during the early years when Brown was just starting out, and yet undiscovered by the general public and the second during his height.  He discussed the concerts (especially the earlier one) with almost a reverence.

I was "turned on" to James Brown some time in the mid to late 70s when I was looking for some kind of alternative to the bubblegum pop and disco they continuously played on the airwaves.  Although classic rock was not yet classic and R&B was for the non-white crowds, it was these two types of sounds that caught my attention (and have never let go).  The first Brown album I heard in its entirety was Live At The Apollo (which at the time was already almost 15 years old) and it just blew me away. His voice, his lyrics and the power emitting from the phonograph's speakers were amazing.  At that moment, I became a life long fan.

Brown was not only a great musician, but was a legend.  In many ways, it was Brown that has influenced hundreds, if not thousands of musicians and many musical genres. Many of the early rock musician took their cues from Brown's music that is the basis for much of today's music.  It was Brown that probably even put the "Hip" into "Hip-Hop" and the "B" in today's R&B stands for Brown.

Well, enough of all that remising and telling you what a legend the man was.  You want to read about the CD.  Simply put, it is a CD that includes all of his biggest hits from "I Got You (I Feel Good)" to "My Thang."  If you only have room in your collection for one James Brown CD, then this is the one, because it has everything that you need.  The track selection is excellent for a greatest hits album and the production quality is fantastic.  However, if you are an aficionado of Brown, this is only a taste of his mastery and it obviously does not include some of his lesser known stuff that is just as good as the #1s, but just never made it off the album, even to a B side.

One related note, beside this being a great album, the CD case itself is recyclable and biodegradable and with all that is going on today in the environment, I support any company that has our futures in their business plan.
