Flavors of Entanglement Album (2008)

Alanis Morissette

Warner Bros.

Review of Flavors of Entanglement

Alanis Morissette has one of the most amazing voices.  I never really listened to her until a few years ago when she was on, and I am embarrassed to say, the Howard Stern Show.  I was listening to the program and Morissette was one of the guests.  Stern asked her to play and she did so "unplugged." I was just blown away by her voice and went out and purchased my first Alanis Morissette album that very day.

If you want to understand what I mean, you only need to listen to track #5 - "Not As We." The song was produced to highlight her amazing voice instead of hide it behind a bunch of noise and synthesizers.  Morissette does use a number of different technological accompaniment in a number of her songs.   Although the songs are not bad, such as in "Underneath" or even the lead track, "Citizen Of The Planet," I enjoy the songs where her voice is brought to the spotlight.  That being said, next to "Not As We," "Citizen of the Planet" had become one of my favorite songs on the album, followed by "Tapes," which is also lyrically a nice song.

There seems to be a bit of international flavorings on this album as well. Beginning from the lead track, I get the sense of a Bali influence on the song.  Another song, "Moratorium" also (to me) has sort of an international sound -- possibly with an Arabian feel.

The album ends off with "Incomplete" -- which is probably has the best lyrics on the album.  It is worth stopping and listening not only to the words of this song - but what it means.  Overall, I have to say I was extremely please with the album.  It was well mixed and produced and provided a diverse array of musical treats.  Although some of her tracks can be considered "pop," most of the album just provides a lot of good music - the type you can put on the home stereo and used as the backdrop to your day, or just to sit down to listen and enjoy.
